Windows 8 Windows Explorer Keeps Crashing

01 December 2012 - 04:55 PM

So I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and only kept files (so I had to install all my applications again). It's been working pretty good so far but recently, windows explorer always hangs whenever I click on icon on the desktop or any icon in Windows explorer. The cursor just shows the loading icon forever. I have to restart windows explorer for it to go away. If I start explorer.exe with admin privileges though, Windows Explorer doesn't hang, but then I can't run any Windows 8 apps (for some reason you can't run any 'Metro' apps while explorer is running with admin privileges).

Another weird thing is if I click anything from the Win-X menu, it won't work. Like the menu shows up, but nothing will run if I click on an item.

Restart fixes the problem, but the problem comes back quickly after.

So I'm not exactly sure why this is happening and any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: I found out it was Acronis being in the context menu that was causing the problem. I easily disabled it using ShellExView.

Windows 8 Upgrade/Clean Install/New Partition Dilemma

30 October 2012 - 12:10 PM

So I have Windows 7 and use it as my main OS. It has all my files etc, and is great. Because I'm a student, my University gives free Windows 8 OS's so I now have Windows 8 too. I have one of the Windows 8 public betas on a separate partition.

I was wondering if I should:

1. Upgrade my main Windows 7 to Windows 8 (don't lose any files, settings, but there is a Windows.Old folder)
2. Do clean installation of Windows 8 on my other partition to test it out (it's a smaller partition)
3. Do clean installation of Windows 8 on my current Windows 7 partition (after backing up a shit load of files)
4. Do not install Windows 8 at all

One of the reasons I want to stay away from upgrading is because I've read that there is a Windows.Old folder that keeps all your old files/programs and I'm not sure if I really want that. I prefer a clean OS where I know where all my files are.

Help dual-booting Win 8 Release Preview and Win 7

17 August 2012 - 04:58 PM

I installed Windows 8 Release Preview on a separate partition, but unlike the consumer preview, I don't get the option to choose between Windows 7 and 8 on startup. I went to the properties of My Computer > Startup and Recovery, and Windows 7 is not in the options. How can I get both to display there because right now, I can't even boot into Windows 7.

Help with misbehaving - can't move/copy/rename

14 August 2012 - 08:00 PM

I torrented a movie last night and left it running over night. In the morning, my computer was running a bit slow (probably from being on the whole night I'm not sure), and I tried to move the movie to the My Videos folder but because everything was acting slow, it was taking really long to even start moving the file, so I kinda of crashed explorer and restarted my computer.
But now I still can't move or copy or even rename the file, even in safe mode. When I go to the folder, the folder is "loading" even though only the 1 file is in there, and just does that forever, I even left it for over 20 minutes. I even tried safe mode but the same thing happens. When I try moving the file, it just says discovering items and nothing happens.

I ran CCleaner but that didn't fix it.

Also the weird thing is, I can still play the movie, so it's not like the file is totally corrupt.

EDIT: I also can't delete the file :|

Can anyone help?
