NVidia is not nececeraly better, although, the 6600 series did kind of beat ATI untill X850XT PE, seems to be the same case with the 7xxx but the X1800XT is proving wrong with clock speeds going up to 1GHz+ core and close to 2GHz for memory.

In your case the 256MB card is better, remember if you want full vista glory you need 256MB lol.

You know you will find Nvidia 6600 GT users every where. The sale of this card is on very high side. I personally prefer Nvidia 6600 GT as a budgeted card.

their prices are $199

For 6600GT only BFG and Leadtek are expensive. You can buy XFX or eVGA for $129
BTW Nvidia 6600 GT DDR3 is available with 256MB also ;)

does the ATI or the NVidia have the fastest clock speed? if the ATI has fastest clock spped and the most ram, use it. And ATI and NVidia are head to head in doing updates and keeping the user current. In all honesty, as far as benchmarks go, you will probally not see a difference by yourself.

I would tell you to buy a X800GTO, if you're looking into the $200 budged, because it outperforms both of these cards. It usualy consists of 256MB GDD3, around 500Mhz core and 900Mhz memory, with 12 pixel pipelines.

I think ATI cards doesn't have Shader Model 3.0 support.

I prefer Nvidia. I have Geforce 6200 and I'm planning to buy GeForce 7800 GTX

Depends on where you're looking at. I found one for $195. And another for $179, and another for $200, and that I found in a matter of what? 2 minutes. Go to google and search for x800gto, not gto2 which is more expensive. And search for benchmarks too, remember google is your best firend. Only by looking at how many pipelines this card has compared to these two, there is nothing to think about really(8 against 12).

Go with the 6600GT. You will be happy with it. ForceWare is, in my experience, strongly superior to Catalyst drivers, and the hardware is better-supported. Additionally, the 6 series are better designed overall than ATi's competing cards.

I must say this. Memory amount is not everything. The average consumer might see a card and say "ooh, 256MB, it's obviously a better choice." That is not true; the important thing is the chipset you're using. And Nvidia totally wins there.

As for which 6600GT to get, I recommend the BFGTech model. According to [H]ard|OCP, it averaged about 47 fps on Doom 3, 43 fps on FarCry, and 81 fps on Half-Life 2. That's pretty impressive.
