I love the idea of companion apps for games. Ubisoft has released Assassin's Creed 4 companion app for Android and iOS which makes perfect sense because of all the micro-management you have to do to in menus to unlock stuff, craft new items and trade to progress in the game. You can interact with the main game 24/7 with the help of the app. The app allows you to use the ships that you have captured in-game to send on missions, secure routes, collect cargo and money.

App features:

  • Interactive map
  • Progress Tracker
  • Set waypoints
  • Search for treasure
  • Secure your routes
  • Send your ships on missions
  • Collect cargo and currency
  • Secure your uPlay friends' routes
  • In-game messages
  • Community challenges
  • Animus Database

This is the same thing Hideo Kojima announced for Metal Gear Solid 5 that you will be connected to your game 24/7 via an app for earning money, producing ammo, crafting weapons and leveling up your soldiers. Ubisoft has plans for developing companion apps for Watch_Dogs and The Division too.

These companion apps are really good. I use GTA iFruit app to customize my cars and to keep my dog happy. :P

Xbox Smartglass is awesome.
Half of the AAA titles from this year have their own companions apps.
NHL 13, WoW, COD Elite, BF4 Battlelog, Far Cry 3, Hitman etc.
