A new kind of Chrome App have been introduced by Google which brings together the speed, security and flexibility of the modern web with the powerful functionality previously only available with software installed on your devices. (Think apps designed for your desktop or laptop, just like the ones for your phone and tablet.) These apps are more powerful than before, and can help you get work done, play games in full-screen and create cool content all from the web.

Features:

  • New apps work offline
  • Launch apps directly from your desktop
  • Works outside of browser
  • Connected to the cloud
  • Desktop notifications
  • Interact with your USB, Bluetooth and other devices
  • Keep updated automatically
  • Syncs with other devices

All the apps work similar to their Android or iOS versions. They work offline and sync whenever they detect Internet.

Have a look on the launcher:

I installed Google Keep, Wunderlist and Pocket apps. They really look like native Windows apps now. (Y)

There are web-based apps on Windows 8 too, they run offline, runs naively, are connected, have desktop notifications, are updated automatically, can interact with devices and other parts of the OS through charms and app contracts, and so on...

..but of course, no one cares, and it only matters when Google does it.
