Rainmeter is an open source widget platform which displays customizable skins/widget, like memory, battery power, RSS feeds and weather forecasts, right on your desktop. Many skins are even functional: they can record your notes and to-do lists, launch your favorite applications, and control your media player - all in a clean, unobtrusive interface that you can rearrange and customize to your liking.

Rainmeter 2.5: New version comes with FileView plugin, which can index details (path, name, size, type, date, and icon) about all files and folders in a specific location. The developer also added several new mouse actions that include support for the mouse wheel. These allow you to set a particular action for rotating the scroll wheel, when the cursor is over a skin or meter containing the option.

Installation: The new version is compatible with skins written for any version of Rainmeter. There is no need to uninstall or change any existing setup to use the new version.

There are no gadgets in Windows 8 so I had to install Rainmeter. In fact, it's better and more flexible than Windows gadgets.
