Avast released beta version of it's Avast 8 free antivirus last month with a new user interface and more options than ever before! Today, the final version of Avast 8 has been released. Here are the new features in the free version of the antivirus:

  • Software Health module
  • Browser Cleanup tool
  • New User Interface
  • Improved Autosandbox/Sandbox technlogy
  • Improved General AV performance and stability

The premium version comes with two new features Data Shredder and AccessAnywhere.

Download Avast 8 Free
You don't have to uninstall the old version. You can install Avast 8 on top of Avast 7 installation. All settings should be preserved. Or you can use the built-in updater of Avast 7 to upgrade to Avast 8.

I like the new UI. The software update feature (for 3rd party apps like flash, vlc, utorrent etc.) is awesome too. It doesn't redirect you to the site, it actually downloads the file you need and runs it.

There's a firewall in Avast 8 free? If I remember correctly there was no firewall in Avast free version before.

The firewall is only available in Avast Internet Security. When you click on the "activate" button, it opens a website for buying "Internet Security with Firewall and SafeZone".

I just got a notification from Avast that an important Firefox update is waiting to be installed. I clicked on instal and it updated Firefox for me. I'm impressed with the fact that it can update all of my installed softwares :D

What about resource consuming?

4.8 was "light"

5+ is not.

what about 8?

@hb860 it's still light on resources. There is only one process AvastUI.exe which takes only 3MB of RAM when idle.
