There is an unwritten law that newer Operating Systems and software require more resources like better CPU and more RAM but not is the case with Windows 8. Troy Hunt, a software architect, conducted a test and found out that Windows 8 is about two times faster than Windows XP on a 7 year old laptop.

Laptop's specifications:

Lenovo T60 (released in 2006)
1GB of 987 MHz RAM
1.83 GHz Intel core duo CPU
7,200 RPM mechanical drive

And the results:

Have a look on Troy Hunt's blog for more of his interesting posts.

I got Windows 8 for $15 and installed it in my 4 years old laptop which came with Windows Vista pre-installed. It performs like a new laptop now. :)

I will admit, my Desktop (before I sold it) when I put Win8 on it was AMAZINGLY stable and fast... It put Win7 to shame.

My laptop that I have with is amazingly awesomely fast, Win8 is a great thing.

Also, I have found that a few of the Metro apps are faster that a Chrome sessions.

Example: Win 8 Mail gets my gmail a lot faster that how chrome gets it.  Almost instant, really.

...Windows XP.

???

On what? A Pentium I ? lol

On a normal > Mid range rig from the last few years, 7 leaves XP in the dust

If you only have 128MB RAM and a Celeron single core CPU, then yea

If you want to compare XP and 7 in terms of speed, you have to benchmark them in one of two ways, both of which will kick XPs ass

Method 1: A system built with 2001 hardware running XP vs a system built with 2009 hardware running 7

Method 2: A System built with 2009 hardware running XP vs the same system running 7

Method 3 would be running XP and 7 on hardware built in 2001, which is likely not going to happen with any grace or cheating by adding a load more RAM / modding the install disk to accept 2001 specs
