With help of Tihiy (the author of StartIsBack) I have figured out how to make opaque taskbar in Windows 8. I have created a lightweight application which does that thing.

As you can see, with Opaque Taskbar for Windows 8 you will be able:

  • to disable taskbar transparency
  • to restore the transparency back
  • to make Taskbar opaque after Windows startup.

Opaque Taskbar for Windows 8 is free, portable application and does not require to be installed. It is compatible with Windows 8 x86 and Windows 8 x64.

This is how it looks:

Cool, but It doesn't work with the secondary taskbars on multi monitors. They're still transparent when I run it.

Great job! Transparency on the taskbar is useless. It's better to disable it to see the things clearly.

Your app just edit the registry, right? Can I delete it after disabling the transparency?

Frylock86, i have fixed the issue. That because secondary Taskbar in Windows 8 has another window class. I never knew that before.

So, Opaque Taskbar 1.1 is available for download.

you are wrong. it works via DWM API, so you should run it every time you want to make taskbar opaque.

HEY!!!! here is the best update ever!

Since version 2.0 the new command line option is available:

opaquetaskbar.exe /resident

It allows you to keep Taskbar opaque even if theme or Aero color was changed.
In resident mode Opaque Taskbar for Windows 8 will stay in memory and will show a tray icon with context menu.

Use that menu or just double click on the tray icon to toggle the transparency.
Also, "startup" checkbox will ask you if you want to keep the application in memory after startup.

I am sure that you will like this changes. It was very annoying when you changed the window color and taskbar became transparent back. So, fixed :)

Can't we have a permanent patch? I don't like to keep it in my startup list.

The only way for a permanent patch is to do a hack of way to many system files.  Running a memory-light app in the background is not that bad.  I support HB on this, he did a great job, and I hope that he keeps on updating. :D

The Opaque Taskbar will run in the resident mode, but will not show even the tray icon.

Tip: Opaque Taskbar works like a charm in Windows 10.
