Microsoft announced that it sold over 4 million copies of the Windows 8 upgrade in the system’s first three days of availability. The announcement came during CEO Steve Ballmer's appearance at the Microsoft BUILD keynote on Monday at the Microsoft campus in Redmond, WA.

Ballmer also mentioned the launch of Surface, but did not reveal any specific sales figures for that particular device.

Windows 8 isn't going to sell. In fact I think it's going to be a resounding failure. There's no way it... Oh-

Great! Now release a service pack and IE10 for Windows 7 then we'll be all good.

Well, the upgrade license is cheap, works on pirated Windows 7 copy, and you can do clean install with it...there is no reason to not to buy it. :P

What were the figures when 7 and Vista came out? Are these numbers higher?

The first month for windows vista was about 20 million and windows 7 40 million copies. If the sales are constant, windows 8 will barely surpass windows 7 numbers.

But don't get too excited about windows 8 first sales numbers. They are mostly presented to please shareholders and it's pretty hard to confirm it's accuracy. Wait for the first month numbers instead.
