Here's a conversation I just had with a potential client? I'm posting this because it's seriously gotten to the point where people who don't know JACK about coding trying to tell coders what they should make and how much time should be put into coding it.

When you can't do it, you pay us to! You wouldn't cheap a plumbler on fixing things, don't cheap a web developer on doing their job. We have the knowledge and experience for a reason.

$700! I would seriously laugh, make a joke, and hope he gets the point to pay higher.

$700 USD? It sounds just about right to me if that fee doesn't involve the graphical assets. I dunno how things are like in your country, but that is actually more than what clients here in my country (Singapore) would want to pay.

It all depends on your clients country and the location in your client's country. Still, my nationality is American and I charge USD prices. For a site like that $1,500.00 - $2,500.00 depending on the content and back-end work needed. That price does not include custom graphics either. Also, the price can go higher if more work is needed.

When it comes to coding sites, you have to charge exclusive prices. More than likely, you have to always code something brand new in the backend to fit the project to the client's needs. Even when a client uses a template, you still have to do more work because a template doesn't provide anything but the graphics and the basic front-end stuff.

A site like that would have graphics ranging from $1,000 - $3,000.00 alone and back-end work ranging from the prices I gave above or higher depending on what the client wanted to do for the site.

One way to always be beaten in earnings from a client is working hourly. I think all developers and designers should only work hourly on updates. When delivering a brand new project, you should charge set exclusive prices only.

When you work hourly and have experience, you will always be paid less than what you are worth. Say a project should make you $5,000.00, but you decide to do it hourly at $40.00 and finish it in 25 hours. You will only make $1,000.00 and will be losing $4,000.00, because you finished the project fast because of your experience. On the other hand, a less experience developer and designer would make more hourly because they would take more time. Still, it would take you 125 hours of work to make the $5,000.00 you should have gotten when delivering a new project with a set price.

Depends. I work full time at the moment (at RIM :P) so I want to charge more to dedicate my time to this project instead of the other job but $700 is pretty low for a site that has everything done in CSS and JS (pretty much)

Exactly. I gave him a quote of $2100 but I know that's below average price for this sort of work. Dunno what happened because I didn't deal with him directly, a relative did.

Since I never got paid for web stuff, I googled a bit on what the average price was, reached the conclusion that a full modern website with graphic assets is about $3500.

Actually, for that price, a site with a backend and graphics, it's reasonable. It's not a dummy static HTML page.
