Gabe Newell, the co-founder of Valve, the company behind Steam has once again trashed Windows 8 saying users will probably "rage quit" computing after using Windows 8. He further says that he may be wrong and Microsoft may make money out of it but most of the users will hate it.

Last month Newell announced that the company is now going to bring all their games, Source engine and Steam to Linux because Windows 8 is a "catastrophe".

But the desktop is basically the same. That's why I don't get it. i'm using Win 8 RTM and gaming is pretty much the same. Lill bit faster maybe.

Do you REALLY believe in that ? Because you can't be more wrong.

I have a question. I installed the Release Preview yesterday and am using it, and it still has transparency. Did they take out the transparency and make the full flat non transparent UI in the RTM version?

Yup I'll stick with the Release Preview for now.

And btw, people always say you can just stay in desktop mode if you hate Metro (like me), but Metro is integrated in way too much. If you want to search anything (like Windows 7 start menu like thing), anything you try to search opens up in Metro and then you have to do everything from that Metro search thing. It took me forever to find the Turn off/Restart button because it was in Charms (Win-C) > Settings > Power > Turn off, or you can search for it. Also, the default media player is in Metro and makes absolutely no sense. I have a bunch of songs that I want to play, but to play them, you have to first add all of them to a now playing playlist, or it just loops the same song. I feel like Metro is confusing and slowing me down, and I consider myself a pretty advanced/power user. Imagine the average user trying to use the new Metro UI.

The 1 thing that is good is the minor tweaks they made to explorer like the new copy/paste/move dialog, task manager, and it definitely feels snappier and faster, but I don't like how the RTM looks with no transparency and totally flat UI.

Pretty much. The new UI is pretty terrible and pointless for PC users and will cause massive confusion and hate from consumers (from the experts to your grandmother).

It's possibly amazing for tablet users, but those who are used to PC and other version of windows will probably hate windows 8.

Experts should know enough that they can avoid the start screen completely if they don't like it.
Classic Shell (http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/ ) gives you the start menu back and can automatically start you on the classic desktop (meaning you don't have to even click the desktop tile). It even can make the windows key on your keyboard bring up the start menu instead of the start screen.
Don't like to go to the start screen to search?... get Everything (http://voidtools.com/ ).
Don't like the default media player?... take your pick. There are tons of better players to choose from.

I've been running Windows 8 since the developers preview and I've got it set up so the only time I ever even see the "metro" start screen is if I _choose_ to (which is rare). And before anyone says "if you're not going to use the start screen, why not stick with Windows 7?" The answer to that is simple... speed. Everything is a bit faster with 8.

EDIT: fixed urls, since WinMatrix decided that the ) was part of them.

You can just search directly from Metro if you go to the tile screen and start typing.

You can right click on your username in the top right and select lock, then use the power button on the bottom right.

Not having Aero is really nice, in my opinion.

I'm using a laptop. I'm really loving the performance, battery life, and smoothness. No tablet here.

My drivers on my HP m6 laptop worked perfectly fine with dirty install.

Music application is super nice looking, Metro UI is perfect, I removed watermark from some application on a website.. So far has worked with all of my programs. They just recently released AMD video drivers for Windows 8 so I'm covered in that area too regarding my desktop.

The only problem for me is that I used the start menu a lot to get to Documents, Downloads, and most of my programs. But now I just use Launchy.

Good! steams support is a TOTAL DESASTER! I will stick with origin...Steam is just cheap and refuses to update and change PERIOD.
Great changes are shortly coming anyway so steam will be left behind

this is not true. No one knows what the update will be, but it will be fairly major. That's all that we know.

You know, Steam is about to change, as they are improving their social community on there. I am in the beta right now and it looks good. I may guess that not long after they released it fully they may improve the UI to adapt the community UI. :)

But yeah, Valve doesnt reveal anything unless its really necessary.

Origin and Uplay is bad because Steam have been the first platform out there and Origin and Uplay have had their time to get released with all the stuff that Steam has and even better but no, they release them with the fewest amount of features possible.

Steam is by far the best option out there. Also, Steam is neutral and allow all games to be released there. EA only allow their own games on Origin, Ubisoft only allows their games on Uplay.

Steam is the real deal that is not taking any ego-part in this situation.

(from the experts to your grandmother).

Experts should know enough that they can avoid the start screen completely if they don't like it.
Classic Shell (http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/) gives you the start menu back and can automatically start you on the classic desktop (meaning you don't have to even click the desktop tile). It even can make the windows key on your keyboard bring up the start menu instead of the start screen.
Don't like to go to the start screen to search?... get Everything (http://voidtools.com/).

If I have to use a bunch of 3rd party programs to bring Windows 8 back to a similar, though less integrated and still lacking features, then MS screwed up. Classic Shell? It emulates the Windows 9x start menu, not the Vista/Windows 7 start menu (where it all stays in one menu with integrated searching).

"Everything" is not a solution either. It lacks integration with Windows. It's a work around to not use Metro.

Providing work arounds to MS's abysmal UI is not a solution. I see no need to "upgrade" if I'm going to bring it back to a UI/experience that is less than that of Windows 7. Windows 8 might be marginally faster, except when it comes to booting. But if you're upgrading because your boot times could potentially be halved, then you're spending far too much time restarting your computer! Saving 15 seconds for something I might do once a month? Not worth it. The rest of the gains in Windows 8 are marginal at best. If you're on a low end PC/laptop, you might see a difference. If you're on something high end, like what I have, it's not worth it.

First of all, half you links are dead. Also, didn't MS say something about how they are eliminating all those 3r party programs to bring back the start menu. They clearly don't want it. Furthermore, about my rant about the searching. It now takes me an extra click to find anything useful because I usually search for settings such as mouse, keyboard, color management(type in colo and it's the first thing that pops up), etc, but the Metro search searches for Apps by default so I always have to move my hand to the mouse, click on Settings(or whatever it's called), and then select what I originally searched for. Little things like this are making my Windows 8 experience more cumbersome.

Yeah well to bad they cant stop indie dev's like myself from making 3rd party apps that will make 8 go in to the desktop AND give you a start menu (although a metro-styled one... for now.)
