For more than an year, Microsoft has been using the word 'Metro' for it's new design language/philosophy but in the past few days, Mary Jo Foley have been hearing from a number of her contacts that Microsoft is trying to slow, if not halt, internal and external use of the term "Metro." Microsoft has started to notify its Windows developers that they should refrain from using the word "Metro" throughout their applications if they refer to the Windows Phone or Windows 8 interface.

The change could be related to a dispute between Microsoft and a German company over the use of the Metro naming.

The Windows team is working on a replacement term and plans to land on that by the end of this week. Until then, employees have been advised to refer to the Metro style user interface as the "Windows 8 style UI."

I don't see how a design might disrupt their business. The shops themselves aren't called "Metro" anyway so there is no way to confuse consumers.

"You may recall that Windows 8 includes a new runtime engine, the Windows Runtime, or WinRT. This is analogous to Win32 on the desktop side, for the most part, a runtime in which apps/applications run, and a set of APIs that developers target when creating these solutions. In the same way that one might refer to the desktop as Win32, one might likewise refer to Metro as … WinRT."
