Gabe Newell, who has worked at Microsoft for 13 years and the co-founder of Valve, the company behind Steam and the Source engine games like Portal 2 and Left 4 Dead 2, stated that Windows 8 will be a "catastrophe" at Casual Connect, an annual videogame conference in Seattle.

"We want to make it as easy as possible for the 2,500 games on Steam to run on Linux as well. It’s a hedging strategy. I think Windows 8 is a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space. I think we’ll lose some of the top-tier PC/OEMs, who will exit the market. I think margins will be destroyed for a bunch of people. If that’s true, then it will be good to have alternatives to hedge against that eventuality".

There is such term in Russian Linux geek community as "Wendekapetz" - roughly translated as "The End of the Windows".

Well, here it is.

As FalseAgent's signature says - "Windows 8 - Computers are finally getting the wonderful reset that it had always needed." aka "We're getting rid of Windows!".

Gabe never said Windows 8 is bad, it's just a "catastrophe" for Steam.

He said

I think Windows 8 is a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space.

I may also make this quote boldened, underlined, italic-ized, or even write it with GIANT FONT so you'll be able to see he said about Windows 8 in common, not just about Steam.

I personally switched to linux, but I want to tell what Windows 8 is not a problem for gamers.
I feel no reason to graving Windows 8 by Valve.

Actually, that is exactly what I meant.

'Old Windows' is trash. I can't think of a single average joe out there that is truly happy with their Windows-based computer. Obviously, things aren't working out. It's time for a change.

Frankly, I think a metro Steam app would be a huge, HUGE opportunity for Valve. Given how self-directed the people are in the company, I don't think they'll resist for long. I've never really liked the current (win32) version of Steam, it always feels sluggish. Kinda like how iTunes is like.

Gaming on WinRT as a whole is a huge opportunity, and I wouldn't want to see only Xbox live monopolizing that market. The next Call Of Duty could come with support for the charms menu and stuff.

Hell, i'd like to see Apple throw us a bone and make a metro iTunes app as well. Bliss!

Actually, I would love to see Apple support Linux. Then again, I think Apple might be working on a different strategy all together.

It would be nice if they did that...but we both are just dreaming

The best games for Windows 8 are Minecraft and Super Mario.
