After the launch of the Office 2013 Preview earlier this week, Microsoft has now launched Office Web Apps Preview for SkyDrive. The web apps will come with an updated user interface, as well as with a variety of performance improvements.

It lets users access Office documents with any device that has a web browser. User can sign up by downloading the Office 365 Preview version, or by signing into a SkyDrive account via a special web page.

Microsoft has also added better support and performance for devices with mobile web browsers, such as iOS and Android-based products.

Isn't Microsoft doing the same thing what Google did with Google Docs and Google Drive?

You'll be disappointed to know that Google is doing the same thing what Microsoft did with Skydrive wave 4 and Office 2010.

nah it's alright. Office Web Apps 2010 with Skydrive wave 4 was a v1.0 thing, so very few people knew about it. Plus I don't think Microsoft pushed it hard enough.

But now, Office Web Apps has been getting attention through integration with Facebook(!), integration with Hotmail, and with Office 2013, it will be appearing in Office 365. More people will definitely be using it now.

IF I recall correctly, Microsoft kinda started combining document storage in the cloud with OWA and SkyDrive, and then Google entered the market with Google Drive and stuffed it into Google Docs.
