Microsoft urged Windows 7 and Vista users to download a tool in a security advisory that disables the sidebar and desktop gadgets for security issues. Disabling the gadgets can help protect the users from vulnerabilities that involve the execution of arbitrary code by the sidebar when running insecure gadgets. Some says advisory is merely an attempt to prepare users for the rumored removal of gadgets in Windows 8.
