Microsoft just announced PCs running Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 are eligible for a downloadable upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for just $39.99 in 131 global markets and in 37 languages.

Apple announced its next version of OS X, Mountain Lion, would be available as a $20 download in the Mac App store in July. This upgrade is available to Mac users currently running Lion or Snow Leopard, meaning it applies to Macs around three years in age. It's great to note that Windows 8 Pro upgrade applies to Windows PCs around eleven years in age.

The $39.99 upgrade will be available through Windows.com only, and the boxed DVD-based upgrade will be available for $69.99 through January 31, 2013.

Pricing for other versions of Windows 8 still have not been announced.

Lulz, No thanks. I'll take my 20$ Mountain Lion update and that's it. Maybe if I got windows 8 free like windows 7 was from that party pack thing however

Suit yourselves. I'm not missing out on this offer. Even on my student budget, $40 is hard to say no to. It's cheaper to upgrade than to not.

It's even cheaper to dual boot 7 and a Linux Distro.

I'm not a big fan of Windows 8, however I will agree that you are right. Linux really has nothing on windows in general, or os x. It'll get there eventually

I WILL be getting Windows 8 , just due to the price drop. while i dont care for Metro, a good deal is a good deal. And i DO need 8 to make sure that mStartEX works good on it.

The price drop will more than likely make all users switch to Windows 8. Hopefully a big price drop for Windows 7 as well. All I care about is having people use IE10 that use IE.

I'm ready to make full CSS3 animation sites for clients that everyone can see.

Microsoft should offer a similarly priced downgrade of Windows 8 to Windows 7.
