THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS!

Removing the legacy code from its Windows 8 operating system is something Microsoft is currently working on to prevent third-party developers from releasing modifications and hacks in an attempt to re-enable the Start button and Start Menu in future builds.

Microsoft has recently been "furiously ripping out" legacy code in Windows 8 that lets third-party developers bring back the Start button, Menu and the other parts of the desktop interface according to Windows watcher, Paul Thurrott.

Whilst we are aware that certain UI hacks enabled the Start Button and Menu in the Consumer Preview, Thurrott confirms that they will simply not work on the Release Preview that will be released later today.

Despite a growing debate over the Metro UI not being as intuitive on desktop PCs as it is on tablets, Microsoft doesn't appear to be willing to offer a solution to people who simply prefer the old way of doing things in a desktop environment with its upcoming Windows 8 release.

Microsoft's approach could anger developers and users who prefer the traditional desktop aesthetics over the new full-screen Metro ones, but Microsoft’s main concern is about convincing developers to build Metro-styled applications.

Microsoft already plans on dropping the Aero UI before the RTM builds so there's clearly very little room for any major additional changes before the operating system ships later this year – which means Microsoft will not cave in to the idea of re-incorporating the Start button, Start Menu and parts of the desktop interface.

Wrong, the Dev Preview could be hacked to bring back the start menu etc, the Consumer Preview had to use 3rd party like ViStart

Waaaaaaa.... The Start Menu is dead, so why not just let them remove the code in peace? It'll make for a more stable and secure environment in the long run. If you really want a 9x menu, wait for RTM, there will be an app for sure. If not, Rocket Dock and the like all still work, etc.

Guess that people can start using my app then or ViStart...

@Frylock... so what if we said this? OSX has had the Dock for way to long, we will be removing it form OSX and preventing any and all attempts to bring it back by native or 3rd party apps... And TBH, the Dock is just as old (Apple didnt invent it, you know), if not older, than the Start Menu.

At least there should be an option to enable the start menu.

Exactly. The start menu is one of the best features of Windows 7/Vista. Instead of going through some crazy sub menus to find something such as power options, just type in power in the start menu and choose what you need. Also, I've used the start menu to find general topics that I'm not too sure what the name of it is (ex. Type in 'wireless' and a whole bunch of stuff related to wireless will come up).

I really don't understand why they are killing the start menu.

I'm thinking of something differently.

If Microsoft set that start menu aside, would it be more friendly to bring

RibbonUI to their start screen?

Actually, Metro is good but not on the PC. It is just my opinion.

I am now really thinking of sticking with my Windows 7 OS as long as the support doesn't ends but I am thinking of trying (In Virtualisation Software) the Win 8 Start-Button-less Interface just to check out if it would suit my taste.

You can say that...
Becoz when Microsoft released Vista, Most of the things were changed for XP users and most of them didn't migrate to the new OS. Even today we see Win 7 has less percentage of users than XP even though Win 7 is more Stable, Secure and less annoying then Vista...

And so Now when Win 8 has arrived, Most will stick to their old OS's i.e. XP (till Support ends) and 7.
It may attract those who really love the Metro Interface but most of us don't want such an Overall change which would force us to again change the way we use our PC's.

In my Opinion, Microsoft shouldn't have brought Metro to Non-Tablet Users or atleast even if they ported it, they should have given a option to choose between Metro And The Normal UI.
