57 percent of world's PC users admit they acquire pirated software, according to the ninth-annual BSA Global Software Piracy Study. Some users say they pirate all or most of the time, according to the study. Others say they do it occasionally or rarely. The net effect fueled a global software piracy rate of 42 percent last year.

The commercial value of all this pirated software climbed from $58.8 billion in 2010 to $63.4 billion in 2011, a new record, propelled by PC shipments to emerging economies where piracy rates are highest.

Of course. Inb4 1 non-pirate comes in (who is probably a programmer) and starts explaining why it's bad.

I'm a genuine Windows, Office suite, Norton Internet Security and Sony Vegas Pro user. I occasionally pirate games if there's no demo available just to test them before buying.

LOOOOL. Yea that popup is so annoying, but I think on 64 bit Windows 7, it doesn't pop up. I don't really know why but I don't care.

I pirated WinRAR.

I also had pirated version of WinRAR but when I got my new laptop I decided to install only genuine or free softwares in it. I switched to 7-Zip and never regretted it.

On my genuine Windows 7 based PC, I mostly use freewares.

I have bought more than 30 games for my Xbox 360. I pirate games only on PC. That's because I don't spend much time on my PC for playing games.

Nope. Not now anyway. I used to pirate, i pirated like ALL hell. Then, well, i kind of "grew up". You see, i got so tired of all of the trojans, viruses, etc that came with those apps and games, well, fuck it, it isnt worth it.

And YES i AM a programmer. And yes, Programmers are anti-pirate, pay me cash bitch f-ever... or thats what the Paid Programmers are like. people like hb, myself, etc... we are "freeware" programmers. no nag screens, no "register me for free so i can keep a count of how many users", just "here is an app i made, have a go at it."

In then end, I use 2 OSes, Windows 7 for the apps that cant run under Wine, and whatever form of Linux i feel like at the moment (currently Arch).

Frankly, I just own legal software only from Microsoft (including OSes).

Otherwise, some of them are cracked.

Too bad you don't know how to download stuff without getting viruses (read the comments, scan with AV, use trusted sources etc.) but I laughed at the 'grew up' part. I know lots of my uncles and relatives that pirate movies all the time.

Not software, I'm either on Linux using it's free software, or I'm on Windows too scared of getting a virus from the cracked software. And I'm only now starting to become a pc gamer so I haven't got pirated PC games either.

I call bullshit. A pirated piece of software does not automatic constitute a commercial loss. For example: if I pirate CS6, that does not mean Adobe loses 2000 dollar/euro. I would never buy it at that price tag.

The effect of piracy is more subtle and in no way reflected by this BSA publication, which is only helpful to governments and publishing companies to limit consumer freedom.

The BSA's studies have been disproved numerous times. They artificially inflate the numbers to call attention to the issue and to raise false concerns in order to push things like SOPA.

I have a Demonoid account and that's the only place I ever get Pirated stuff from. and I just get ebooks. demonoid is safer then Pirate Bay because its all encrypted. Also you can get a proxy to hide your IP. so there are ways to avoid getting caught. the other thing is don't seed!
