So I "converted" my Ubuntu 12.04 to Dan Rabbit's elementaryOS.

I even wrote an article and attached a set of scripts to automate it for any that would like to re-produce what I did.

Article is located at this site a show it can be a bit lengthy, but it is good.

Is it Gnome 3?

The underlying tech is gnome-shall, but it is not gnome-3. hence the GTK3 look and up and such.

I was actually super excited in trying this out, but seeing as how ubuntu refuses to work on my system (grub's stuck in rescue mode with the error:unknown filesystem) I can't

have you successfully installed Ubuntu 12.04? you may need to try again, or, see about downloading the iso that is the "alternative installer" AKA text-mode.
