The first ARM based Windows devices are expected to arrive on shelves later this year, when Windows 8 is made available for purchase. But Microsoft attempted to port Windows to ARM over two years ago, the company apparently already had Windows running on the low-power architecture.

According to EXIF data, the two photos above were taken on January 22nd, 2010 with a Samsung Omnia Pro, but that's not Windows Mobile on this Asus P835 smartphone. It's a build of Windows 7, and to give you some idea of the timing, it predates the January 27th announcement of the original Apple iPad by several days.

Yeah, Windows on ARM (WOA) is older than the iPad.

Now that's genuinely cool.
I remember using WindowsCE on some handhelds, on ARM processors... does that count? if so, WinCE = ARM = atleast 5 years before iPad...

Wow, MS should have released this build of Windows 7 for ARM based laptops.

Yeah, Windows on ARM (WOA) is older than the iPad.

First of all, Windows is an OS and the iPad is a device. Second of all, the iPad was said to have been in development for over a year before its release. It's not like on January 26th Apple decided to produce the iPad and announce it on the 27th...

You're making an apple to orange comparison. You're comparing the port of an OS to the release of a device?

An Apple to Apple comparison would be the port of Mac OS X to arm (known as iOS), which was completed on June 29th, 2007, 2.5 years before that picture you posted.

Now for the orange to orange comparison, Apple beat everyone to the market with a tablet in the form factor of the iPad. Windows 8 devices were destroyed and Android devices were hastily put together to try and bid for marketshare.

A M E N !

Just look at those pictures! A turd on a plate would look like more like a viable tablet concept than this.
Perhaps these kind of pictures is good for the bruised ego of MS and its fanboys, but to me it just makes me laugh at the ignorance of MS regarding tablet devices.

It partly explained to me how they came up with W8. MS have little knowhow in optimal software and hardware combinations, something which made Apple big.

Good point Flashing Fish. It shouldn't be compared to iPad.

Agree with everything that has been said on this thread. It's just the tech blogosphere sensationalizing all these little things.

WOA may have been in development before the iPad, but that doesn't say anything at all. Microsoft is still comparatively late with their tablet entry into the market, and definitely later than the now dominant iPad.

yet another stupid headline by the blogosphere.

It partly explained to me how they came up with W8. MS have little knowhow in optimal software and hardware combinations, something which made Apple big.

they're slowly getting it. Microsoft has always been a platforms and software company with little direct knowledge on hardware.
