Google has moved Chrome 17 to the "stable" channel today, a month after the beta release. There are two main changes in Chrome 17, faster page loading with the Instant Pages and security improvements.

The Instant Pages feature of Chrome that pre-loads Web pages in the background as you search has been expanded to the Oomnibox, (Chrome's combined address and search bar). If you're typing in a site you visit all the time, and the address auto-completes, Chrome will begin pre-rendering the page, reducing load time.

Improved Security feature in Chrome 17 can now analyze executable files - such as ".exe" and ".msi" files - that you downloaded yourself. It's now more secure against malware attacks. You can read more about the safe browsing here.

Chrome's security feature works similar to IE9's Smart Screen now.

This is how the new security system works:

Every time a user downloads a file, the browser will compare it against a whiltelist of known-good files and publishers. If the file isn't in the whitelist, its URL will be transmitted to Google's servers, which will perform an automatic analysis and attempt to guess if the file is malicious based on various factors like the trustworthiness of its source. If the file is deemed a potential risk, the user will receive a warning.

Chrome 18 beta has GPU-accelerated rendering for 2D Canvas content. And a new feature that improves 2D graphics performance in HTML5 and a software rasterizer to enable older machines to display content rendered using newer, unsupported technologies such as WebGL.

To see what new features are supported by your system, type chrome://gpu/
