Microsoft is going to cut the Desktop mode from Windows 8 ARM tablets. That would mean only Metro-style apps would be supported on that platform, according to Paul Thurrott.

Mary-Jo Foley thinks it's the right thing to do if Microsoft and its partners want to position ARM-based Windows tablets as more of a true iPad competitor. Windows 8 is the first time Microsoft will have Windows running on ARM, so why not use that as a place to cut the cord and support only new "modern" apps on that platform? Even if Microsoft did go ahead with its plan to offer Desktop App on Windows 8 ARM tablets, it wouldn’t run existing Windows x86/x64 apps. Developers still were going to have to rewrite them.

So it will like a completely new OS where all the old apps will be incompatible. :(

x86 apps still won't run on ARM anyway, even if Desktop Mode were to be kept.

Thank you, God! Now, please, help them get rid of all that Metro sh*t in the PC version of Windows 8.

Thurrott has added that another trusted source tells him Desktop mode will now be included in ARM Windows 8

Yup. Old apps never had a chance of working anyway.
Remember when Apple went from PPC processors to Intel processors? Same thing here. You will lose all prior apps at the cost of a hardware change. It's the same thing now. Microsoft is doing what Apple did.
