Facebook is testing a new Facebook Messenger for Windows 7. It provides access to Chat, the Ticker feed, and notifications. The official Facebook desktop client is in the closed beta stage. The client could become popular, considering that the Facebook-integrated Windows Live Messenger desktop client that lets you Chat with friends as well as third-party instant messaging contacts is the top app on the Facebook Platform with 18.2 million daily active users.

This application only works on Windows 7 at the moment.

Wow, thanks for the great news! I use Facebook Android Messenger all the time and Skype as a Facebook desktop client right now.

The messenger is good. I'll keep it on in my taskbar's notification area. But I hope there would be an option to disable the ticker. I don't want to spend 24 hours on Facebook daily.

What's the point in this? Just use Facebook Chat?

Believe me. It would be nice to have a messenger running instead of a full blown site. I like the messenger that comes with Ubuntu, but it doesn't pull up history or deliver all the messages.

Fewer steps in the long run to access facebook. Gotta make it as simple and stupid for the masses.

It's non-sense.

Users already opted for web-based social networks as they don't need to

install any app. Hmmm, today someone is trying to persuade us to move to

the app once again. Nonsense.

I don't see what the problem is, especially when millions of people have the FB app installed on their iPhones/ Android phones. Installing this on your PC isn't that very much different.

I really don't see a problem with it especially when almost every messenger and even email clients add Facebook integration. I think it's finally time that Facebook takes control and gives users an app developed by and managed by them. Especially when third parties haven't done a great so job at it.

People aren't stupid for wanting things made simple. Sometimes you want to work on things and maybe talk to a friend in a small window and not through a big web page.

Bottomline, they are doing it and there's nothing you can do to stop them.

I don't get it. I just don't. You'd have to sign into it like Facebook (unless you use remember me, like you can do on any browser anyway..), it would probably take longer to open than Chrome... take up even more RAM/CPU/Whatever on your PC as you probably would have it open WHILE on facebook anyway? Since when does anyone use facebook JUST for the chat? Usually you're multi-tasking i.e;

Stalking your ex
Stalking some hot bitches holidays pics
Generally stalking
Stalking
Chatting to your mates

?????

I use it to keep intouch with family and friends, add people I just met at a party or out somewhere, business consulting, to find out somethings going on, and also online groups to discuss things.

If someone uses it for stalking reasons, then they are obviously using it for the wrong reasons.

Playing Farmville
Stalking the feed for Farmville goodies

Fixed for how Facebook is supposed to be used ;D

But I agree, just leave the tab open! Pin it as an App Tab if it's getting in the way

Lol, that line is true.

Well...whoever uses it, I won't be.

The only reason I HAVE to absolutely use MSN for most of the things is Messenger Plus. I just can't function properly without it.

There's MSN, Google Talk and Skype...and now Facebook.

Just use a god damn multi protocol client if you IM that much. Adium, Pidgin, Trillian, etc.

My only reason for using MSN is the Live groups, you can't chat with a live group on anything else.
Skype, is there even a different client offering the full functionality?
Google Talk, coz it's extremely light weight.

Also, doesn't MSN already offer facebook chatting? Doesn't skype offer that too?
