Chuck O'Rear was driving to visit his girlfriend when he was struck by the beauty of the rolling vineyards.

Many people would have carried on without bothering to stop and take a photograph.

But the former National Geographic magazine photographer was so entranced by the green of the grass and the white clouds in the perfectly blue California sky that he pulled over and got out his camera.

Never for a moment did he think the shot would become the most viewed image on the planet.

This is the area shot by Chuck O'Rear in Sonoma, Napa, North California, for his 'Bliss' photo used by Microsoft Windows XP.

I never understood this...

Is the final picture used in Windows XP an edit? Or is that really how 'perfect' the grass and the clouds were O.o ?

Amazing story. I always like to take photos of things when I'm out. You will never know how much an image would impact someone without taking it.

I'm sure the contrast was cranked up a little bit but other than that I believe the clouds were like that. I've caught perfect blue skies with pure white clouds before.

I hate this wallpaper. I've seen it so many times in the last ten years, it's just not funny anymore.

Yes, 10 years ago this hill was better, smoother and sky was bluer and clouds was whiter. Things changes.

And that makes me sad

Admit it - we all loved it 10 years ago when it first debuted.

I kinda want to plot it out and frame it for my wall. I wonder how much geek cred that will get me.
