Microsoft launched Windows Live Gallery (gallery.live.com) back in 2006. Windows users could download a wide variety of gadgets / widgets, plug-ins and other applications from the website.

Now The Windows Live Gallery has been retired. In order to focus support on the much richer set of opportunities available for Windows 8, Microsoft is no longer supporting development or uploading of new Gadgets. However, some of the most popular and highest-rated gadgets are still available on the Gadgets page of the Windows Personalization Gallery.

With Windows 8 Developer Preview, developers can create rich app experiences where customers focus on their important tasks. Apps are at the center of the Windows Developer Preview experience and are alive with activity and vibrant content. Users immerse themselves in your full-screen app while Windows gracefully gets out of the way.

joke aside, let's face it, no one used any of those gadgets. They take up memory, slow down your start up, and occupy screen estate.

Gadgets are a UI paradigm that will die.

yeah, but they aren't just gadgets. Live Tiles replace static icons. Live Tiles represent apps and they act as launchers too.

Live tiles are like icons and gadgets combined into one.

I use the desktop gadgets. I use calendar, network meter, weather, and facebook feed, in a column at the right side of my widescreen monitor. I went online to grab a stock market tracker gadget and figured out in a few minutes Microsoft killed this feature. It does not slow down my laptop (more powerful than I need really) and I regularly use the ones I have. Very disappointed.

:(

It's a shame they decided to kill desktop gadgets. I'm not going to upgrade to Windows 8 until I buy a tablet.

Live Tiles are Microsoft's answer to Rainmeter. And you dont even have to know Javascript, HTML/5 or CSS!
