Microsoft is preparing a Windows 8 tablet for attendees in Build conference, where Microsoft will unveil Windows 8 to the world on September 13.

Microsoft demonstrated an unknown quad-core Windows slate on Thursday at its Tech-Ed New Zealand conference. Microsoft employees Jeff Johnson and Patrick Hevesi showed off some new Windows powered slate devices during the "Come and see the latest and greatest in Windows Devices" presentation at Tech-Ed New Zealand earlier today. Alan Burchill, a Microsoft MVP, posted details of the session on Thursday revealing that Microsoft promised to give the device out at an upcoming Microsoft event. Burchill has since removed his comments but ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley managed to note that Burchill said: "What is very interesting is that device was a 'Quad Core Windows Slate that will be give(n) out at an upcoming Microsoft Event."

All I'm going to say is that I better see a new Touch UI design for Office and Windows Tablet OS using fingers. It better not cater to only a mouse for productivity use. It's a BIG FAIL if they just throw the same BS on there like before just with a new nice looking start screen.

Dude. That wasn't "just a start screen". They showcased an entirely new app platform. Understand that they need to evolve the OS in a way that caters to both touch and mouse/keyboard. That means changes entirely across the board, which really is no easy feat, and it's pretty scary that Microsoft is taking such a huge risk with their biggest product.

They will do their best, and they will do a good job. Give them a break!

and Office is an extremely complex and mature product that can't just evolve overnight. <_<

and finally,
TABLETS ARE FUCKING OVERRATED.

there. I said it.
I'm sick and tired of every single business decision being made based on tablets even when tablets aren't half as popular as regular PCs. Seriously, screw tablets...

Thus, as a Windows application developer, it is truly a good news

that I can port my software to the tablet more efficiently and easily.

No need to re-implement a software as an Android-compatible Java or specific iOS codes anymore.

I'm totally happy with this.

Whats the news here??

Its like showing Steve Ballmers butt and claiming you can run W8 on it ;)

Tablets are the future. People like things simple and not complicated. The market has spoken VERY loudly already about that. People hate dealing with window management and mouse interfaces. Tablets aren't going anywhere and people are buying more tablets every day for every day use.

Just be real about it. Tablets are faster to wake up and navigate through than a PC desktop OS. The advanced apps are already there and more are coming.

Microsoft should be releasing a Touch UI Office for Tablet users. If not, then they FAIL again for tablet users. Everyone that has fallen in love with iOS, Android, WebOS (tear), BlackBerry OS, and others aren't going to be happy when they launch the tablet OS and office expecting a completely Touch UI, because it's a tablet, and get a mouse UI office and other programs requiring something smaller than your finger like a mouse or stylus again. Those days are over and if they don't bring it, their tablet is over.

LOL...funniest thing I heard all day. I'm sorry, but I just had to say it. The Stylus is pretty much dead, but the mouse/cursor is definitely here to stay for some time.

Tablets are part of the future of everyday general computing, I agree, but tablets in their current form are simply not the "3rd device" that people are expecting, and tablets in their current form are really overrated. People have better stuff to spend $400++ on, simply put. Tablets are still questionable, and I do get questions like "what can the galaxy tab do?" or "what can the iPad do?" pretty often.

There is a distinction that needs to be made between those 'media consumption tablets' out there and Microsoft's 'Tablet PC'. Microsoft's approach to the Tablet is different and comes with a separate set of merits/demerits.

The advantage of a Windows 8 tablet is that it can pretty much do anything your PC can do now (and probably more), but the disadvantage is that you may not have a full Touch UI for all of your existing apps.
For iOS/Android, you don't get compatibility with any of your existing apps, but however, you get a full Touch UI everywhere.

There is both good and bad so i'm not going to judge.

It would be nice if Microsoft made a touch-based version of Office (or, hell, even a touch-based version of all the programs in the Windows Live Essentials suite) on Windows 8's new app platform, but I don't see it happening...at least not for now. Like I said before, the Office suite is an extremely complex and mature product, and if Microsoft wanted to make a touch-based version of Office, it would have some pretty big shoes to fill. It will take time.

Dude Microsoft has had plenty of time. Microsoft has been in the mobile office game longer than Apple. iWork, QuickOffice, Documents 2 Go, and others have already started and are doing great with mobile Touch UI offices. If they release a tablet with the same crap, I don't see anything big happening for them or the tablet. They will continue to drop and remain in the other category in mobile devices like they are now.

Time will tell.

Microsoft's biggest mistake was dropping The Courier project instead of improving it. They were the first HP/WebOS mistake.

@FalseAgent

The stylus will not be replaced that easy. Think about wacom tablets, they're a niche for artsy fartsy types but they sell extremely well. I've tried using the painting applications on tablets and phones but it feels like I'm 5 and I'm finger painting. There's no accuracy and the lack of a stylus makes the whole process a chore.
