Dolby admitted that current builds of Windows 8 do not include the company's Dolby Digital Plus technologies.

Dolby revealed the omission on a post-earnings conference call on Thursday. “We have recently learned that our technologies are not currently included in the Windows 8 operating system under development,” said a statement by Dolby. "If our technologies are not included in the commercial version of Windows 8, we expect to support DVD playback functionality by increasingly licensing our technologies directly to OEMs and ISVs, and we will seek to extend our technologies to further support online content playback."

Microsoft previously included support for Dolby Digital Plus directly into Windows 7. The support allows DVD playback of up to 7.1 channels of high-def surround sound.

Maybe Microsoft is going to use "DLC" for their OS.

I'm thinking Microsoft is looking to save money on their OS.

Microsoft like Apple is trying to move away from the optical world.

Meh. There are plenty of free codecs that can play DVD formats just fine, and many DVD and blu-ray drives include codecs and software to play back these formats. So I don't see what the big problem is.

LOL, it's not like I can't install codecs but I hate researching on Google for codec packs, media players, and drivers etc. May be I'm too lazy but I want my DVDs to work on Windows out of the box.

Branded PC and laptop manufacturers usually install these codecs. So Dolby will work 'out of the box'. ;)

FFMPeg or CCCP Pack or K-Lite or... it matters not. Way to many options and choices for installing Codecs. This isnt even an issue.
