Microsoft is calling on users of its Windows XP operating system to "move on", and it said there are less than 1,000 days of support left for it, but I think it's plenty of time...isn't it? :P

The news came from a blog post by Stephen Rose, a senior community manager for Windows client stuff at Microsoft, where he urged users to embrace Windows 7 instead.

While at first the 1,000 days of support left doesn't seem like that much, it's actually close to three years, which is more time than Windows 7 has been out. Support will end on 8 April, 2014, by which time Microsoft will have launched Windows 8 and started trying to push Windows 7 out to pasture. On that day, Microsoft will no longer offer any additional security updates or patches for Windows XP!

Microsoft also advised it's customers not to wait for Windows 8 but rather make the jump to Windows 7 today, during the Worldwide Partner Conference 2011. Microsoft said something similar a few years ago when customers were beginning to ask whether they should upgrade to Windows Vista or wait for Windows 7. :D

Some people will use it all the way to the very end. True XP hardcore users. Like they say, "A classic never dies."

I can't believe Battlefield 3 won't run on Windows XP! I don't understand how EA can't get it through their tiny little heads that gamers don't want Windows Vista or Windows 7!"

I'm going to make a meme comics with this comment for getting lots of karma!

A gamer friend of mine said that to me. He is one of those XP die hard "Know It Alls". I've been telling him for months now to look into upgrading, but he denied.

I simply said back "I told you so!".

1000 days is a lot of time. I'm fixing a computer as I type this and putting a fresh copy of XP on it.

1000 = 3 years give or take. FOr one computer that is no problem.

For thousands, that presents an issue.

An OS Is not like a classic car, it does not gain any value what so ever being a "classic" I still will never understand why people value XP so much and hold onto it

I guess they like being open to rootkit infections, buffer overflows, Windows Rot, and having a generally unstable system. Lol

For some people, this means they finally have to buy a new machine because their hardware is outdated and only works well with xp. Think about all those people with old laptops and desktops that won't run well on Windows 7.

That looks like shit out of the box

Someone should invent an opensource OS that runs well on older hardware...

Who wants a stable OS?
Computing is infinitely more interesting when you don't know what your OS is going to through at you next! ;)

Now where's my copy of Windows Millennium..I know it's around here somewhere...

I hope, for the person whose computer you're fixing, you're just joking. It's been 11 years now, MOVE ON!

It's because Microsoft built custom XP installs for embedded systems, such as cash registers, ATMs, etc. And those can't be swapped out that easily. But it's happening. Just slowly.

It's not that easy. Some people still think XP kicks all the new Windows ass. I have to say that in some cases they are right and some they are wrong.

3 more years of support means that XP might live to see the day of Windows 9.

No, no way they are right. XP has nothing going for it over Vista or even Windows 7.

And there is no way 3 years from now all these people will still be using XP. Companies especially won't be using it on front end machines anymore. A business owner will not risk running his or her company on an unsupported ecosystem. The only saps still running it will be those families who don't know any better.

And technically, XP is not even fully supported anymore, what is supported is security fixes.
