Microsoft just announced that Internet Explorer 10 will not be available for Windows Vista users, just a day after releasing IE10 Platform Preview 1, Vista users will not be able to install the Platform Preview, nor the final release of Internet Explorer 10.

We already know that Windows XP users can't install IE9, so it's really no surprise at all that IE10 will also be ignoring the decade-old operating system, but what's the reason for not supporting Windows Vista users, market share?

Both the release notes and installation process mention that the IE10 Platform Preview 1 requires Windows 7 32 bit or 64bit for installation.

"The Internet Explorer Platform Preview requires Windows 7 (x86 or x64) Operating System. Platform Preview 4 and later require updates to be installed on Windows 7 systems, after which your computer will require a restart."

People need to move on, I see no problem with this move from Microsoft.

Most corporations skipped Vista too, so it's not like it would hurt thier bottom line. Just as most people have moved to Windows 7 for everyday use anyways.

+1 for Microsoft here. :)

Ubuntu and Firefox loves everyone :)

Pay for the computer not the web browser.
---------------------

I know some Vista users that will be upset with this. Then again most the people I know I suggest them to use Ubuntu and most love it.

What's worst is that now XP users and Vista users will be left in the dark by their OS maker and developers will have a bigger problem coding for worthless IE9 and IE8. Keep it up Microsoft! The more users you leave in the dark the more opportunity Firefox and Ubuntu have :)

LOL! Ubuntu? Linux market share hasn't gone anywhere even after the whole Vista debacle.

Besides, look at Vista's market share, it's sinking alongside XP's - People are upgrading to 7.

But the whole issue here is this, by the time IE10 RTWs Vista, will be in extended support - Just like XP is with IE9. Meaning, Vista will only be getting security updates at that point, nothing else.

Looks like MS is looking to only support their two newest products. Not much different than what Apple is doing.

Difference is their products aren't sloppy and their web browser is packed with features and is up-to-date with standards. Even Tiger (third to newest), has a great browser.

About Safari 4.1 for Tiger
Post Date: June 07, 2010

This update contains improvements to performance, usability, compatibility and security, including:
  • Performance improvements for JavaScript, Top Sites, trackpad pinch gestures
  • Faster page loading with DNS prefetching and improved page caching
  • Bing search option in the Search Field
  • Improved support for HTML5
  • Improved auto-complete in the Smart Address Field
  • Improved tabbed browsing, with the option to automatically open webpages in tabs
  • Improved Full History Search, with date indicators that show when webpages were viewed
  • Easier switching between Top Sites and Full History Search
  • Improved Private Browsing, with an icon in the Smart Address Field when Private Browsing is on
  • Improved protection from cross-site scripting with XSS auditing
  • Improved support for web applications that use JavaScript Object Notation (JSON)
  • Improved developer tools
  • Performance and stability improvements when pasting text into text fields in webpages
  • Stability improvements for auto-complete functions, PDF handling, and transferring images from Safari to iPhoto
  • Stability improvements when using Facebook and eMusic.com
  • More reliable authentication to Windows IIS
  • Fixes an issue that prevented some users from dragging files when logged into etrade.com

Unlike Microsoft, Apple and Linux provides users what they need and don't force them to upgrade to use a up-to-standard browser. Funny thing is, the newest Windows system doesn't even have an up-to-standard browser. Windows 8 browser will have the standards of Opera now... wait that's too much credit. I've seen technologies in Opera that will take Microsoft to Windows 9 to release. Opera Turbo and the grouped tabs are great features as well as the HTML compatibility.

When Mozilla and Google can release Firefox and Chrome for XP and Vista, then why can't Microsoft?

XP is in extended support. No more software for it by Microsoft.

Vista WILL be in extended support. No more software for it by Microsoft after October of next year.

BTW, keep in mind that XP has had support for IE 6, 7, and 8.

Vista had support for IE7, 8, and 9.

If this schedule keeps up, Windows 7 will have IE8, 9, and 10 should be the last one. We'll see.

Besides, I fail to see the issue. Vista never had the warm welcome it deserved, and it's market share is declining along with XP's.

Mozilla, and Google are coding for the LCD when they code their browsers. Meaning they have an over bloated browser with code to support what they can with XP and 2K yet on top of Vista and 7.

IE9 is the browser with least HTML5 support compared to Chrome11, FF4, and even Safari.

Thus many web devs don't much like it.

That's why MS is moving their focus to IE10 so soon.

Chrome sucks compared with IE9 or even Firefox 4 on the IE9 HTML5 demo site. It can't handle even 10 fish. THis was done on Windows 7.

Because Firefox and Chrome do not provide the features that IE does.

XP gets a piss poor implementation of hardware acceleration.

Well that's Windows and it's terrible technology. Every browser runs better away from Windows. Here's a video of Chrome I just did with 20 fish and then 50 fish on Ubuntu. This was also done on my laptop using my phone's WI-FI Hotspot internet. LG Optimus V on Virgin Mobile ROCKS!

I could say the same about Ubuntu. Linux is a complete non starter for many, many people out there.

You can say what you want, but Linux is a very powerful OS. Some can't handle the power of it and have to resort to something simple. Even when you can make Linux as simple as the rest. Linux is a great starter, it's the laziness that makes people think it's not a good starter. If you want everything done for you, then Linux may not be the best choice. If you can take a few minutes of your time to customize it how you want it, then Linux will be the OS for you. Again, it depends on the person. Same goes for Windows and Mac OSX.

I was just proving a point with the video. Browser performance is very different on Windows, Linux, OSX, etc.. I've experienced the worst on Windows, The best on Mac OSX, and near the same as MacOSX on Linux. The applications can only be as good as the OS.

Millions have installed and still use it to answer your question. Majority of web servers are Linux-based. Mine especially B)

So, as you go on your merry way dissing Linux. Remember, it runs majority of the web you love so much.
