Avast 6 is really the most lightweight anti-virus! I've uninstalled Microsoft Security Essentials 2. MSE's MsMpEng.exe use 60 MB during idle time.

But Avast free version 6 is as light as feather! With memory consumption less than 10 MB during idle time, it is one of the lightest antivirus!

Worse for who? you maybe but it may work very good for other's, as i have said time & time again AV softwares will be different for each individual, it all depends on hardware/softwares/useage that it is working with so to say that it is the worse that is the wrong statement, not good for you maybe

I rate |Avast to be one of the best AV softwares there is on a whole, taking all considerations into account.

My MSE 2.0 uses 1.6 MB of RAM. Less than Avast. I think Ill stay with MSE

I have 8GB of ram, So I dont think that i will be worrying about a few MB that MSE uses.
And my MSE almost always shows up in the 5.8XXK range. Nothing big to worry over.

Honestly, MSE and Avast are basically tied, MSE maybe a bit better. If you have either AV, just stick with your current one, no point in uninstalling it after a new version of some AV comes out. I've had Avast for a while now and decided to stick with it because of its reliability, even with the many articles of MSE being the best AV out there.

MsMpEng.exe is Microsoft Windows Defender process which uses 55MB to 60MB. MsMpEng.exe comes with Live Oce Care and MSE 2 too but I think it can be disabled (not recommended for anti-spyware).

In the day and age of 4 - 8GB of Ram standard on most machines now a day are we really hassling ourselves over RAM?

Norton and Avast are both equally light on resources. MSE being lighter than both of them.

Repeating old mantras from 6 years ago is bad enough using them to insult others when they are no longer valid is even worse.

MSSE is not the best anti-threats. But it's the police who works very well with the citizen!

It doesn't consume much resource while we're working on PC. That's why many people opt for it.

However, I think other brands have a larger virus signature database indeed.

Bugsy you are right but the RAM usage varies from 10 to 15 MB for each individual.

Average RAM consumption of Avast, Norton and Nod32 would be less than 15 MB but MsMpEng.exe of MSE 2 always uses more than 55 MB all the time. Interesting fact is that MsMpEng.exe is just an anti-spyware. MSE 2 antivirus (msseces.exe) memory consumption is only 10 MB.
