Microsoft confirmed this issue, and noted that IE9 is not to blame, but that at fault is an incompatibility between the next generation IE browser and old hardware. The issue is related to the HTML5 performance enhancements built into Microsoft’s next iteration of IE. IE9 brings to the table hardware acceleration, leveraging the computer’s GPU (graphics processing unit) in concert with the DirectX APIs in Windows 7 and Windows Vista SP2.

SYMPTOMS
When you browse a webpage by using Windows Internet Explorer 9 Beta, you may experience slow performance. However, this issue does not occur if you view the webpage by using an earlier version of Internet Explorer. This issue may be more noticeable when you browse webpages that have more complex graphics.

CAUSE
This issue can occur if Internet Explorer 9 Beta is running in Software Rendering mode.

By default, Internet Explorer 9 Beta uses GPU Rendering mode. However, some outdated video cards and video drivers do not support GPU hardware acceleration. If Internet Explorer 9 Beta determines that your current video card or video driver does not support GPU hardware acceleration, Internet Explorer 9 Beta uses Software Rendering mode.

To determine whether Internet Explorer 9 Beta is using Software Rendering mode, follow these steps:

  • Start Internet Explorer 9 Beta.
  • Click Internet Options on the Tools menu.
  • On the Advanced tab, locate the Accelerated graphics section.
  • Verify that the Use software rendering instead of GPU rendering check box is selected.

If this option is selected, Internet Explorer 9 Beta is running in Software Rendering mode. If the option is greyed out, your current video card or video driver does not support GPU hardware acceleration.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, visit your video card manufacturer website and install the latest video driver that supports GPU hardware acceleration.

Note If installing the latest video driver does not resolve this issue, you may have to upgrade your video card to a video card that supports GPU hardware acceleration.

Sounds like PC's with this issue shouldn't be running Vista/7 in the first place and was maybe one of the determining factors in not allowing it on XP.

yeah i totally agree. use XP or linux with WINE installed. {if you absolutly HAVE to have IE)
the best thing to do is to run Chrome. Or FireFox. Or even Opera.

Agreed. For example the new windows live mail is a hog. Lots of features + slow performance = shitty programming.
MS should take notes frome chrome and picassa startup times!

As a reminder that while slower at the moment, the adoption of newer “modern” browsers will increase in the coming months and years. In regards to IE9 which is still in beta, and soon to be out we see huge improvements in HTML5 browser support from previous versions. It is clear that all modern browsers are moving forward to take advantage of the HTML5 Standards.

For those developing webpages or content for the modern browser environment you can check out the IE9 Platform Preview 7 just released today. You can find it at this link: http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/ . You can download the PP7 and test your HTML 5 designs, and see how they look/preform. Although HTML5 is still pretty new and modern browsers are still in development, the demand will be here soon and it is worth starting to begin developing for the future.

Cheers,
Rick

Exactly. New software are always released with their new features which require higher resources.

Yet another reason, the background services of newer version of Windows may consume less resources

so they let the active software running somewhat faster.
