PC World says that Linux on the desktop has already died, perhaps as long ago as 2008.

"Over the past few years, modern Linux distributions such as Ubuntu have utterly transformed the open-source desktop user experience into something sleek and simple, while arguably surpassing Windows and Mac OS in both security and stability. Meanwhile, the public failure of Windows Vista and the rise of the netbook gave Linux some openings to capture a meaningful slice of the market. But those opportunities have been squandered and lost, and Linux desktop market share remains stagnant at around 1 percent."

As a DEDICATED linux lover, i have to more or less agree. Linux was going strong there, making improvements on the desktop area for a while, BEFORE people started porting linux to every known device known to man. If you look around, you will see that while Linux somewhat failed on the Desktop as an OS, it pulled a major WIN for linux being on devices. Have a DVR? linux. Cell phone? Linux (most likley). There are dozens of every day devices that most likley run Linux.

Linux on the desktop was just a stepping stone for other interests.

I mean, look ah how ubuntu is making this thing called utouch. it allows touch screen, multi touch input. That is not going to be used for the desktop (mouse, any one?), BUT it will be used for tablets, possibly cell phones, and mabey even high end tv remote controls.

I still support desktop linux, but linux is being used in ways that ignore the desktop now.

For me its a NO.

Maybe some of the Linux distros are having some bugs and issues, but its a open source software so it is developed by many skilled software developers and I believe they are glad to know our feedbacks and they will fix it soon.

Linux is not dead. Period. It popped in the spotlight and just died out in public eyes for a bit. Ubuntu is growing strong and with every release gets better. Once more bugs are ironed out, it will start to reign.

There's so much you can do on Linux it's not even funny. As far as the market goes who cares. You can't expect it to be big in a market that favors Apple and Microsoft. Lots of people still don't know about Linux. When I show people Linux they are shocked and can't believe how much it does for free.

The best way to put it, Linux won't die until the community dies.

Developer's lack of innovation make it dead on the desktop. No one is interested in a "me too" product.

Linux on the desktop? yeah, it's dead.

Linux as a open-source project that fuels other projects in the tech world? nope, it is FAR from being dead.

Well considering the majority that use it are people in their 40's and super geeks who live on a diet of Monster and Taco Bell I don't think we'll have to wait long.

Linux is not dead. Period.

The article says Linux on the DESKTOP, not Linux in general.

I meant both. Linux on the Desktop isn't dead at all.
