So on my search for a new laptop, I keep running into these 2 video cards:

1GB dedicated ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 switchable graphics
Nvidia GeForce 310M - 512 mb video memory

So which one is better, maybe a list of advantages vs disadvantages would be nice. I know both cards are good, and the ATI switchable graphics is an attractive feature, but I have no idea which one is actually better.

Hi,

In term of performance the Ati Mobility Radeon 5650, is more powerful than the Geforce 310M, or even a Geforce GTS 350M.

You can check these links for more details, and see the classification of all existing graphic cards for notebooks :

Information about Ati Mobility Radeon 5650
Information about GeForce 310M

good luck.

Ahh thanks - the reason I asked is because this Sony VAIO laptop is on sale for the same price as this HP I've been looking at - both basically have the same specs, but the SONY with a 16.4" screen and 1600x900 resolution.

Can I have your opinions on which laptop is the better buy?

If you're not too fussy over the screen resolution, why not get the HP.

Both graphics cards are in similar performance, one will have advantages over the other (The nVidia 310 has separate shader clocks) and will perform better in some games. If you're not looking to do anything graphic-intensive, you're better off getting the one which looks nicer. Which is IMO, the Sony. :P.

Thing is I'm not a huge gamer, so I might not need the better graphics card... but I don't really know how reliable Sony VAIO's are

The 310M will not perform better in any games over a a 5650. The 310 is a very low end video card for laptops. The 5650 is a better video card in all situations.

You can compare the two video cards here:
http://www.notebookc...0M.22439.0.html
http://www.notebookc...50.23697.0.html

The 310M is garbage for any type of modern gaming. It will do fine for anything else, like movies.

Yea I see, I'll probably have to go check out the Sony VAIO in person to determine if I like it, because I love the feel and look of the HP, especially the keyboard. The only thing is the VAIO has a pretty big screen, maybe too big, and 7 pounds compared to 5.5 of the HP.

Geforce GT310M is re-branded GT210M which is a basic chip & isn't much powerful and is DirectX 10.1 based whereas Radeon HD 5650 is a much powerful chip and is DirectX 11 based and capable of running Battlefield: Bad Company 2 on low-mid settings. You can't even think gaming on GT310! (Here's a review which is in Spanish but u can see the benchmarks

http://goo.gl/8Y6Sf

The desktop part of HD5650 come pretty much close to 9600GT.

All this shut is funny but all you guys are bullshitting bad. I have an nvidia 310m laptop and today was playing the crysis demo on high and with no lag. Didn't check the framerate but no issues. I also gave portal a whirl and no problem. I have a samsung qx410-s02. Its a core-i5 460m, 4 gigs of ram. It plays everything on high blowing shit out of the water, so please explain that assholes?

Because both games have a pretty low Graphic requirements, especially Portal. geforce 310m is pretty much on the par with recommended graphic cards with crysis demo. Being rude doesn't change the fact that Radeon HD 5650 is better than Geforce 310m gaming-wise...asshole.

I vote for the 5650 ATI and the Vaio Laptop because I have one. Mine has a 17" widescreen though. I can tell you this. i Love HP they are great I've never had any problems with HP computers. I haven't had any problem with my Vaio laptop either. One nice thing, Sony stopped putting crapware on their computers.
