The desktop edition of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS will feature extensive design work, faster boot speed, social network integration, online services and the Ubuntu One Music Store.

New in 10.04 LTS:

  • Boot speed: Noticeably quicker on almost any machine and super-fast on SSD-based machines such as netbooks, which means users can speed straight to the browser for fast web access.
  • Social from the start: The new 'Me Menu' in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS consolidates the process of accessing and updating social networks including Facebook, Digg, Twitter and Identi.ca. The Me Menu also integrates chat channels so users can talk with friends or colleagues on Google Talk, MSN, IRC and nearly every network.
  • Ubuntu One: Enhanced desktop integration for the online service means files and folders can be shared and saved on the cloud more easily. Bookmark and contacts sharing has been added, speeding the move from personal computer to personal computing.
  • Ubuntu One Music Store: Music from the world's largest labels and greatest bands available direct to Ubuntu users through the default music player. Purchase tracks, store in Ubuntu One and share DRM-free music from one location across multiple computers and devices.
  • Ubuntu Software Centre 2.0: An easy way to find new software, and keep track of it once it's installed in a new, sleeker interface. Users can also single out software provided by Ubuntu, by Canonical partners or by developers who use Canonical's Launchpad Personal Package Archive (PPA) hosting service.
  • Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition (UNE): As well as benefiting from the improvements in the Desktop Edition, netbook users will see even faster boot speeds on SSD-based devices, faster suspend/resume that will extend battery life - and the industry-leading interface for these smaller screens.

I've switched completely over to Ubuntu. It has been said about almost every release, but 10.04 is the best release so far. They have really released something great.

After install, I was greeted to the login screen in about 15 seconds, maybe less. The Software Store is an excellent manager, and it honestly would be nice to see something like it for Windows.

As for the look, it's way better than what it was. It looks sleek, and even sexy now. Who cares if it looks Mac-like? Mac OS X is regarded as being an aesthetically-pleasing OS. And if people are going to begin to compare Ubuntu to it, then I think they have made excellent improvements in the graphical area.

Just my $0.02. :)

If i want to try Ubuntu (next to windows) should i pick the Windows Installer right?
My pc is x64 capable, should i pick the x64 version? - Or is it better to run a x86 Linux (program support or whatever)

You can use Wubi the windows installer yea, the only difference is disk speed, you will get lower disk performance using Wubi

But if you want a real dual boot environment, just boot from the Ubuntu disk, and in the setup it asks if you want to run Windows and Ubuntu side by side and does everything for you, no need to mess with partitions

Thanks! gonna download it now...

[EDIT] I downloaded both 32 and 64 bits cd images but does Ubuntu 64 bit work like Windows? (it can run 32 bit apps?)
[EDIT2] Installed 32 bits edition but i can't do anything since my mouse isn't recognised....
I have a Logitech MX900 (Bluetooth) Mouse, I went to one of my old pc boxes and picked up a Microsoft Intellimouse (PS2)
This one does not get recognised by Windows 7 and Ubuntu... sucks....

I want to dual boot with windows 7, but theres two things stopping me.

I want to install ubuntu throught the regular install ontop of Vista so I have 7/U10.4 this will make Grub the active bootloader. I would then use EesyBCD to return to the windows bootloader so hibernation works normally. But in the RC/Beta windows 7 lost the cool boot animation when you restored the windows bootloader.

And contrary to what people belive the small command you run to bring it back only restores the animation for the cold boot animation, hibernation is still the old "XP" like system resume.

Well this i dont understand.

I have been running a dual boot of windows 7 and Ubuntu for some months, reinstalling Ubuntu a couple of times (beta testing). And i have never had problems with the bootscreen, the fancy flying dots (are they called something officially?) also comes when resuming from hibernation or a normal boot up.

Edit: and yes hibernation works fine, i can hibernate windows 7 and then boot up the ubuntu partition, i just cant edit in the windows 7 files which is why i have my data on a separate partition.

Using 32 bit windows 7, and a 32 bit 10.04 Ubuntu beta. (haven't upgraded yet)

Yea, if I hibernate windows I want to have it turn on and go back to windows without stopping at the boot selection screen. Windows bootloader does this and GRUB does not.

But if I install GRUB then use easy BCD to restore the windows bootloader then I run the risk of losing the windows 7 boot animation

Wubi has in fact been updated to 10.04. I used wubi last time i installed ubuntu because I didn't want to install Grub. I ran into a mess when one time i deleted the linux partition and could not boot into windows! i did figure out how to fix it though.

DAMN! Just create Extended partition in ANY partition manager (Paragon etc.), then boot to Live CD that u burned, click to install and it will install in friendship with Windows to extended partition! AND animated boot of win 7 won't disappear!

Haven't faced any problems on my desktop with 64-bit kubuntu. It's currently dual booted with windows 7 64 bit on my pc and it works like a charm. But I think Shuttleworth is trying to surpass mac osx in terms of, well everything actually. But they haven't achieved that goal yet. Gonna wait for Maverick 'till I use ubuntu regularly on my laptop instead of mac osx, but I AM gonna remove windows 7 from my desktop :/

Installed UBUNTU 10.04. I was very impressed with the new Plymouth boot screen. Everything fine till i installed NVIDIA drivers.
Now the boot screen changed to ugly 640X480 resolution. I Googled about this problem and found NVIDIA drivers cause this problem. Tried many fixes posted in many forums. None worked so far. Still this ugly boot screen. There are flashes of ugly green lines when booting as well.

But compiz works fine.

Another problem is with CPU scaling. I set it to on demand.(AMD athlon).
But on every reboot it changes to performance mode

User interface is nice but it lacks that old customizability.

In old days you could have easily change the boot screen, welcome screen etc. Now it seems almost impossible.
