The Windows Media Player taskbar toolbar, or taskbad works for WMP 12 so you don't have to downgrade back to WMP 11.

Follow these steps to get the WMP 12 mini toolbar:

  1. Obtain a copy of C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmpband.dll from a computer with WMP11 on it (for the same OS Architecture, i.e. 32/64 bit) The 64bit and 32bit versions of wmpband.dll are attached to this post
  2. Place the file in the C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\ directory on the computer with Windows 7 / WMP12
  3. Stop the Windows Media Player Network Sharing service
  4. Run a command prompt AS ADMINISTRATOR
  5. Execute the following command: regsvr32 "c:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmpband.dll"
  6. Restart the Windows Media Player Network Sharing service
  7. Run Windows Media Player 12 and minimize it
  8. Right click on the toolbar -> toolbars and select Windows Media Player
  9. That's it, if you have any problems try performing the preceding steps after a clean reboot and before running Windows Media Player.

Download:

wmpband.dll 64-bit (x64)

wmpband.dll 32-bit (x86)

There is slight mistake, its Taskbar->toolbar and select Windows Media Player also you will get and error message saying toolbar isn't compatible with windows version just ignore and click yes. Here is download link for 32-bit wmpband.dll file

Thanks Justin for this awesome trick. tried and tested working fine on 32-bit Windows 7 Ultimate.

This is handy. Thanks for the info! I wonder why Microsoft decided to leave this feature out of WMP12.

This works great. I found this fix on another site, but I just wanted to say thanks to the original author. Much appreciated!

Can anyone send me a backup Registry as I have mistakenly deleted without any backup.

The registry is the same you all were discussing about

I've encountered several issues...I works at first glance, but...

You can't close WMP properly. Clicking the red X will cause it the program from the taskbar, but the new toolbar remains (and clicking play will play, so it's not being unloaded, either).

The toolbar also needs to be reactivated every restart.

These issues leave it unusable.
