Highlights from the Google Chrome OS announcement today.
* No launch, beta or devices today (contrary to what was being reported on some outlets)
* Chrome OS a year away
* Project goes fully open-sourced today
* Just over a year since Chrome browser launch - 40 million regular users
* 39x faster JavaScript compared to IE8
* Over past year, Chrome browser updated 19 times
* Chrome browser for Mac and Linux coming, as are extensions
* Google want Chrome OS to access GPU, have better access to system resources
* Perfect storm of converging trends - Netbook growth, cloud, laptop and netbook becoming more like phones, phones becoming smarter, overall increase in mobility
* Google Chrome OS focuses on three things - Speed (”fast like a TV”), Simplicity, Security
* On Chrome OS, every app is a web app, simple to use, easy to maintain
* All data on Chrome OS is in the cloud
* “If I lose my Chrome OS machine, I should be able to go out and buy another and be up and running in minutes …” No local data
* Cold reboot demo - to logon screen in 7 sec, full OS in another 3 sec
* Chrome OS looks like Chrome browser
* Applications can be pinned as favorite applications “tabs”
* All data stored in the cloud in Google Docs
* Streaming music from YouTube
* User data on machine is always encrypted and always synced to the cloud - local data is just a cache
* “Not another OS, but choice for users”
* Google working with OEMs to come up with reference hardware (SSDs, WiFi cards … etc …)
* Target time frame - end of 2010, for Holiday market
* Google want larger netbooks with larger keyboards, touchpads etc
* Chrome OS not downloadable - will have to buy a Chrome OS device … hmmm
* Developers can get Chrome OS running on a netbook today - ”You need a screwdriver”
See that's a deal breaker for me.
"All data on Chrome OS is in the cloud"
"All data stored in the cloud in Google Docs"
Am I the only one who is not interested in having my data sit on a server God knows where instead on my HDD?

Read this from gizmodo:
Quote UPDATE: well according to the liveblog, I'd have to buy a Chrome OS machine...whatever the heck that is.
That's a surprise.. so, we can't just install in any machines

No, you will have to buy Chrome OS along with the machine it runs on.

If it's true, this idea is headed for an epic failure

I knew it would be a web app based OS. Still looks interesting to me.

I have some questions. What is the underlying subsystem? Is it Linux? Will third-party applications work?
What if people want to edit their videos with some application? And download/play/sync their bought music?
You can't upload anything if it's not saved locally on HD. But maybe you will have to use USB (external) disks.
I have been thinking... Maybe it's true; You could connect photo/video cameras to upload and use webbased editing tools.
Just like you can with documents and spreadsheets.
And about device drivers; They probably are restricting to newly created drivers for new hardware. Or mix-n-match Linux drivers.

Web based apps - photo editing sux, no music on your local data, where are you going to save your works or stuffs downloaded from the internet, streaming online going to be painful because of bandwith limitation, opsss! where do i put my last saved works? i had to GOOGLE it

yeah, this is really looking like an epic fail here. as i said, lets hope some one takes the source, and makes it in to a normal linux distro, for normal machines. i would do it, but i'm lazy

This sounds hella vendor lock in as well. Aside from the fact that I can access Live Office, but the way it says "All data stored in the cloud in Google Docs" sounds to me like vendor lock in

Photo editing is getting better.
There is music on your local data, you just upload it to cloud and you can access/save it anytime you want.
Your saved works go on cloud......
Bandwidth? Doesn't everyone have unlimited in this day and age?
YOU PUT YOUR LAST SAVED WORK ON CLOUD. I don't see why it's so difficult for you to understand...

Cloud based computing is great, until someone f's up.
Ask anyone who went through the latest Danger Sidekick fiasco.
I am still not sold on this leave my data in the cloud. Too many variables.

^Is it really secured to put the files on the cloud?
Quote Bandwidth? Doesn't everyone have unlimited in this day and age?
You wished.. Not all country got unlimited bandwith..
And what are you supposed to do if there is no internet connection? Such as inside the plane, or remote area. For me, web based apps can be wasted of times. You have to wait for the apps to finished downloading/loading to used it. There is very limited web apps that you can used on the internet.
Lets say, that your chrome browser screwed suddenly, then all your current works(streaming files: videos, musics, photo editing, word or spreadsheet, etc) will be lost at the same time. Did you ever think about it? Unless Chrome OS automatically saved your current works over time to prevent this.. This can be a hassled..
