Windows 7 has many new features out of which one feature is Windows XP Mode which lets you to run Windows XP on your Windows 7 however in order to use Windows XP mode you must have Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate and your computer must have hardware level virtualization support.

Due to above requirements many user won't be able to enjoy Windows XP Mode. Here is VMLite alterative to Windows XP Mode.

VMLite XP Mode offers similar functions as Microsoft XP Mode, but doesn't require hardware virtualization. It allows you to run Windows XP at the same time from your desktop running on a different host operating system.

Looks like it,

This gets me thinking, what would it be like to run a virtual machine in a virtual machine? Like using vmware to emulate xp to emulate Ubuntu?

That would probably lead to hardware support for software virtualisation virtualisation

Not as useful for me, because with XP Mode, I don't have any 7 functions disabled, like Aero, and I can put shortcuts to virtualized apps in my Win 7 start menu and run them. They act like native apps, and don't have to run the full vm. I agree its a decent alternative though.

As for XP Mode not showing the full taskbar, whats this about? It shows the full taskbar on my end.

I think this IS VirtualBox.
Look at that screenshot:

The menu is exactly the same as VirtualBox.

I think it can download the XP Mode vhd from Microsoft's server and use this. You don't need to have a license for Windows xp. But this is illegal because you haven't paid for the XP Mode license.
