Same like Vista, ReadyBoost in Windows 7 enables users use any flash memory device from a USB flash drive to an SD card, in order to get extra memory cache for their machines. Specifically in scenarios where computers are dealing with limited amounts of RAM, ReadyBoost can palpably increase the PC's performance.

Here are the changes in Windows 7 ReadyBoost revealed by a member of GES:

  • Maximum memory cache size has been increased from 4GB to 32GB.
  • Total 8 ReadyBoost devices can be attached simultaneously on the PC.
  • The ReadyBoost cache can be used during boot to improve startup performance.

Note: Your flash drive needs to be formatted with either a exFAT or NTFS file system for using more than 4GB of memory cache because FAT32 can't read files larger than 4GB.

I've tried readyboost before, doesn't make that much of a difference - but I guess if you're rich enough you can buy 8x32GB USB's and use them :D.

So... you can only get 32gb if you have 8 devices with 4gb? So you cant have a 16gb USB and get like.. 16gb from a single device?

Ops, well.. i just saw my device were FAT32.. too bad xD I have a 16gb SanDisk with U3.. =/

How? i dedicated one 1gb usb thumb drive for Readyboost but how can i make it improve startup performance?
I have 4 gb mem (3.xx used because of x86 / 32 bits OS) will i notice any improvement?

Readyboost is cool but who needs it with 4gb ram being standard?

I wish there was a way to change the pagefile that is still being used by the core even with the pagefile turned off to run from the flashdrive instead of the hdd. Even with large amounts of memory the core will still use a pf and it will size itself to the amount of memory. Or it would be nice to be able to set in the bios of a setting in configuration of the o/s to set a particular amount of ram for the pagefile in place of the hdd.

Hate to say this, but hdd access is faster than flash drive access. Putting the pagefile on the flash drive would be a bad idea.

Was just about to say that - but with USB 3.0 coming soon, this won't be much of a problem!

No, HDD has faster file transfer rate but slower file access speed because it has to spin to locate the file. Where as in Flash drive, file transfer is slower but Windows can locate file faster in it than HDD. ReadyBoost speed up PC by deciding which cache file should be stored in HDD and which in the Flash drive.

Im sure thats what the ads say.

Real world performance is quite different.

Either way, you are arguing a moot point. I was referring to the page file being on a flash drive, which is undeniably a bad idea.

You will not. The OS will still have to load from your HDD. The primary HDD's access speeds will be more of a variable to booting up than RAM or ReadyBoost USB drive; unless of course you're using and SSD as a primary OS drive. Then, access speeds aren't much of a factor and RAM and/or ReadyBoost USB drive WILL show increase in performance.

I'm waiting for some tests. Will 32GB of memory cache do any magic?

^I don't think so.. There is no significance change unless your windows using extremely high memory usage..
