Over a year ago, Microsoft revealed that it considered 15 seconds the ideal startup time for Windows 7 under laboratory conditions.

While 15 seconds was half the time it took Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) to boot, some critics pointed that the 15-second boot was a pipe dream. Well, Windows 7 did manage to provide its fair share of surprises when it comes down to boot performance, and the latest involves a startup that takes just 10 seconds. Just watch the video embedded bellow in order to get an idea of just what is involved in getting from a cold boot to a fully functional Windows 7 desktop in just 10 seconds.

“At (…) Intel Developer Forum, a company called Phoenix debuted new BIOS technology that allows Windows 7 to boot up from black screen to desktop in only 10 seconds. Called "Instant Boot BIOS," the Phoenix BIOS uses new UEFI technology to power on several system devices at once instead of one-by-one. It also runs only those processes that are necessary to hand control over from BIOS to OS,” revealed Channel 10’s Sarah Perez (initially reported by LaptopMag).

The boot speed improvements over Windows Vista became clear very early on in the development process of Windows 7, via the now famous boot drag race. Still, in combination with top of the line and innovative technology, Windows 7 truly shines. Earlier this year, Microsoft itself demonstrated a Windows 7 boot that took only 11 seconds. Curious to find out more about it, I contacted the company and found out what was the configuration of the machine they used.

Phoenix “demoed the boot up process at the conference where they showed a 20-second boot on a retrofitted Dell Adamo as well as a 10-second boot on a Lenovo T400 with an SSD drive. The company’s Chief Scientist Steve Jones also produced a report from performance logging tool Microsoft Velocity that showed how the BIOS only took 1.37 seconds to hand over control to the OS. He said that future optimizations on netbooks could even lower that time,” Perez added.

My friend's system for office: AMDx2, Main Asus, ram: 4Gb, Geforce 8200GS, OS: Windows XP
Boot: 9s
He doesn't know why his system can boot very fast like that
Beside his system for gaming cannot do that: AMDx4, Main ECS, ram: 4Gb, GTX260
Boot: >20s

Wow. That is fast. I think the boot time will increase over time as you increase the number of applications startup.

yeah, if the people would just stop installing usless shit (7 different versions of solitare, 3 different sudokos, MSN, AOL, etc...) and just learn to use msconfig's start up tab (now how hard is that?) the PC's boot time would stay low.

anyway, the title seems to say that Win7 is a super boot machine, when the article points out it is really the hardware. kind of misleading.

i myself am on server 2008, and my boot IS 10 seconds to a useable desktop.

Wow! the boot time speed is very fast.

Currently my Vista boots in 1 minute sometimes more,

Maybe, because there are many applications installed and I have many files in my hard drive.
Now I only have 50 GB left woot:

Now, after watching the video, I'm expecting more boot speed in the future, :jump:

the boot speed like just opening a television.

:yes::

Slow run and slow boot up are common problems for Windows user. The causes are often very complicated. It's not all related with hardware, registry, viruses or spyware!

"No matter how fast or shiny computers might be when they're new, they all seem to get slower over time." Microsoft claimed that on their technical forum(Windows 7 forum).

For example, Windows built-in a lot of services and startup item start with system. Think about that, how could your computer boot faster while more than 50 service start with system Windows. So if you want a faster computer, you need to disable some of them first.

I saw an article on google search engine before. It descriped how to make your windows faster easily. You can get some tips from it. Hope help you!

Both Ubuntu and Windows 7 boot up in under 30 seconds for me. I think I'm fine with that, at least for now. (Ubuntu 10.04 promises to have an even faster boot time, so if that's the case, I'd better start optimizing Win 7 now!)

My Windows 7 boots pretty fast and unlike for Vista when I installed everything I could find  I'm not doing that for W7 and I'm using ThinApps more so hopefully it wont become too slow.
