PCworld installed Windows 7 on five computers (two desktop systems, two laptop PCs, and a netbook), and put the systems through WorldBench 6 benchmark suite, which consists of a number of tests that assess a machine's performance in popular, real-world applications. They also ran timed tests to measure how the two OSs affected boot-up and shutdown times, laptop battery life, and launch times for several common apps.

The verdict? Windows 7 makes some performance strides over Vista, though in some cases we saw no clear-cut winner, and in one area Windows 7 lagged considerably behind its predecessor.

WorldBench 6 Test Results
Posted Image
In our WorldBench 6 Nero tests, Windows 7 showed big improvements. Performance nearly doubled on average over Vista, which indicates that the new OS enhances hard-disk performance. *Average of results from six test PCs. Lower time equals better performance.

Boot-Up and Shutdown Times
Posted Image
Launching Photoshop took two to three times longer on the new OS, but that isn't a big deal--the difference was still just a few seconds. *Times are in seconds. Shorter times indicate better performance.

Battery Life Tests
Posted Image
Battery-life tests were a wash. While one of our PCs gained 15 minutes of run time with Windows 7, the other improved by 1 minute. Your mileage may vary. *Times are in hours:minutes. Longer times indicate better performance.

Considering 7 was built right off of Vista, this is a hell of an improvement, go 7! :woot:

They say Vista is better in Boot-Up and Shutdown Times but 7 loads faster on my machine.

I have no idea how Vista is better than 7. I have not seen one machine running Vista that boots or shutdown fast. It's a Vista problem and not a hardware one.

What? No 3-way dance between Vista, Seven, and XP - ???

Who are they kidding? What are they afraid of?

No surprise about the results - Win 7 should be better than Vista, no?

Just like XP was better than Windows Me...

I heard Vista SP2 has a longer boot up than Vista Gold but has a faster shut down time.

Windows 7 from my experience is much much faster in hibernate and boot up

Nice benchmark!

I guess Windows 7 is stable enough. Vista was much unstable.
