Microsoft Security Essentials (codenamed Morro) provides real-time protection for your home PC that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free download from Microsoft that is simple to install, easy to use, and always kept up to date so you can be assured your PC is protected by the latest technology. It's easy to tell if your PC is secure — when you're green, you’re good. It's that simple.

Microsoft previously had Windows Live OneCare, a paid subscription security suite, but discontinued the product due to user and industry-wide criticism. Now lets see what will happen to "Security Essentials". :)

:download: Download Now

MSE has been praised for it's low resource usage and small installer of just 7MB. It is available for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7

I'll run this just so I have an AV. It did good in it's beta stages so I expect the same performance. :)

Does it do better than other AV? If it is, then i could just uninstall any AV that i got in my Windows, i really hate to use AV because it increases load in Windows. Thats why i prefer Ubuntu now  .

running it now, seems very nice. of course, i had to crack my WGA (i d/l'ed SP3 minus the WGA check), but after that, it installed fine. :D
it does not seem to bog down my system like how the others (avira, AVG, Avast!) did. and IMHO, this is a very good thing.

infact, i had just installed Avira this morning, and once i saw that this was available, i removed it, and installed this.

It's really simple to use and configure, but what about the detect rate? Can it really detect all the viruses?

Could someone be kind enough to show a admin elevated screenshot of their task manager showing how much memory security essential uses.

There are two processes: MsMpEng.exe and msseces.exe.

It's lightweight. It stabilizes at around 27000 for me. I don't know why it's at 32000 in the picture.

Thanks CommonSense.

It seems to be using bout the same as NOD 32.

When NOD 32 is idle:

ESET SERVICE: 28164
ESET GUI: 1460

Guess I'll have a spin at it.

Darn, it's not available for Server 2008 R2. Oh well, let's wait and see if someone finds a fix for it.

Why do people usually avoid the dreaded WGA, again?
