As we know that SP3 was the last service pack for Windows XP 32-bit (x86) and the SP2 was the last major update for 64-bit (x64). After the availability of XP SP3 for x86, Microsoft confirmed officially that it was the last service pack for XP. However, a potential SP3 seemed to be in the cards as far as x64 XP was concerned.

Microsoft now offered official confirmation of the fact that it was not, nor would it be in the future, developing a third service pack for 64-bit XP.

News: Windows Server Division WebLog

Marius Oiaga from Softpedia contacted Microsoft on the matter, and here is what a spokesperson had to say: “Microsoft is not currently planning any additional service packs for Windows XP. We can also confirm that no future service packs are planned for Windows Server 2003.”

All companies have limited resource. Let MS concentrate on Windows 7.

7 64-bit has been running perfectly with me. Not a single app that caused a headache. I think the 32-bit days are starting to disappear as new 64-bit hardware is getting cheaper and cheaper. You can buy 4GB of PC6400 RAM for 50$ these days!!

Hmm.. How about the softwares? Not all softwares compatible with 64-bit and they are downloaded separately. I don't think 32-bit gonna disappears unless all 32-bit softwares are compatible with 64-bit environment natively (and that includes old software that people will still using)

I think i have to agree with you...

Unlike SP2, SP3 is just a huge collection of updates for XP. If you're updating the OS continuously, you'll still get the similar result.

Who cares? Why would anyone continue to cripple their machines by running XP?

Also, has anyone ever seen XP x64 in the wild anyway? I think Linux has more share than XP x64...

It's the OSs that are crippling older hardware and not the other way around.

I used to think so but I've installed Win 7 and it's really a better OS than XP and it such now be Microsoft's main focus.

Don't put words in my mouth.
XP is one of the greatest OS' ever made by microsoft, I'd gladly use it on my new notebook because of the awesome customization possibilities it has, except it needs some kind of HP drivers. Mark my words, XP will outlive vista and it's going to be used years after release of 7.

History repeats itself:
Win2K was a mess, and microsoft released XP which was basically Win2K that's more optimized and had a new GUI.
Vista was a mess (kinda), and microsoft released 7 which was basically vista that's more optimized and has a new GUI.
