SquareTrade analyzed failure rates for over 16,000 new game consoles covered by SquareTrade Care Plans and found that the Wii experienced one-fourth of the common failures that the other systems have. Wii 9 times more reliable than Xbox 360, 4 times more than PS3

Highlights of the study include:
  • Looking at the first 2 years of ownership, 2.7% of Wii owners reported a system failure to SquareTrade, compared with 10.0% of PlayStation 3 owners, and 23.7% for Xbox 360 owners.
  • Excluding “Red Ring of Death” failures, which are covered by Microsoft’s 3-year warranty, 11.7% of Xbox 360 owners reported a failure.
  • While the RROD problem continued to be the major issue for Xbox 360s purchased through 2008, early indications point to the problem abating in 2009.
  • The most common types of problems seen with the PS3 and Xbox 360 were disc read errors and output issues. The Wii had more power and remote control issues than the other 2 systems.

wow, this is pretty detailed..and assuming their data is good, it could mean microsoft may think about doing a refresh to their system much like sony did.

Microsoft has released revised Xbox 360 three times with Zephyr, Falcon and Jasper chipsets but RROD is still there.

yea, MS needs to check their factories, their solder never stays put <_<

PS3 looks like the happy medium and I've never had a freeze on the PS3, I've had hundreds on the 360 and only a few on the Wii

That data looks accurate, I have all 3 next gen consoles, and here is my story.....

I am on my fourth Xbox 360, One was a "Pro" model, and the other 3 were Elites. I actually just got a new elite system 3 weeks ago with the new jasper chip and it seems better than before, using less power. And I got my first 360 on release day.

Now with the PS3, I got the PS3 on release day. I am on my third PS3, but I am only on my third one because I decided to get the new Slim system. Quiet and reliable.

And for the Wii, I got in on release day, it has never froze and I am still on my first one.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Even though I am on my fourth system, my favorite out of the three is the Xbox 360, but nothing beats the Pc for gaming.

I don't understand it.
I know a few people who still have an NES that works perfectly (I still have my Genesis and N64, too), yet people are surprised when their Xbox lasts only a few years? These companies are so worried about having great graphics and cutting-edge hardware, that they cut back on the reliability of their systems.

There has been an intense competition in gaming industry. Not only consoles, even if you take the example of PC gaming, the graphics cards and games have been the least reliable products.

Keep in mind that the old game consoles you speak of have no moving Hardware inside Except of course Sega CD, Dream Cast, Saturn, Turbo Grafix and Neo Geo

And much less hardware, no need for fans because they are not built to run the best they are built for games and reliability

agreed more 360s brake than ps3s but i heard that playing ps2 games on the ps3 will burn-out the blu-ray eye so you can't play ps3 games, that would leave you with a $300 PS2 :\
