You need to patch uxtheme.dll, themeui.dll, themeservice.dll for using the third party visual styles in Windows 7. I made uxtheme patch threads for Windows Vista and XP users but couldn't make the same for Windows 7 because Rafael, the man behind the patched files decided to kill the future of the patched uxtheme.dll files and released a free Uxtheme memory patcher (UxStyle Core) for all the versions of Window, including Windows 7 (which actually is good).

Uxtheme.dll Patched Files for Windows 7 (Manual Process)

The problem is that many Windows users don't want to see additional process running on their Task Manager from Rafael's UxStyle Core. So here is the patched uxtheme.dll and related files for them.

:download: UX Theme DLL's_6.1.7600.16385_x86.zip (32-bit) (Download removed. Use automatic patcher posted below.)
:download: UX_Theme_DLL_s_6.1.7600.16385_x64.zip (64-bit) (Download removed. Use automatic patcher posted below.)

Note: Above links are down temporarily. Download Uxtheme Multi Patcher from below given links.

How to replace these files?
  • Login as a user with Administrative privileges
  • Navigate to %systemroot%\System32
  • Right-click uxtheme.dll and click properties.
  • Take ownership of the file and close dialogs.
  • Repeat steps 3 and 4 for themeui.dll and themeservice.dll
  • Right-click uxtheme.dll and click properties.
  • Give yourself (or group) Full Control permissions and close dialogs.
  • Repeat steps 6 and 7 for themeui.dll and themeservice.dll.
  • Rename uxtheme.dll to uxtheme.old.
  • Rename themeui.dll to themeui.old.
  • Rename themeservice.dll to themeservice.old.
  • Copy patched files into %systemroot%\System32
  • Reboot (yes, this is really required)
  • Enjoy!

If you can't follow these simple steps then use Take Control for taking ownership of system files before replacing them.

Uxtheme Multi Patcher for Windows 7 (Automatic Process)

Here is the easy way for those who aren't skilled enough to replace system files in Windows 7. . Just run the patcher, restart your PC and you are done!

:download: UniversalThemePatcher-x86.exe | (Mirror) (32 bit)
:download: UniversalThemePatcher-x64.exe | (Mirror) (64 bit)

The Multi Patcher requires administrator rights. Right-click the exe file, select "Run as Administrator" and then restart computer before applying the visual styles.

I haven't tested the Multi Patcher so I can't take responsibility of any damage that may be caused. It's recommended to replace the files manually.

I am running into problems. I patched the 3 files, then copied the themes I downloaded from Deviant Art to Windows/Resource folder. When I attempt to change the theme they usually look like Windows Classic themes rather than what they are suppose to look like.

Could someone please do a quick step by step explanation on how to do all this for those who are new to this? Id really appreciate it. Thanks.

@Rum; The patched files linked on the first post are for 64 bit. I hope you aren't using the 32 bit OS.

Revert to the original files and try the Multi Patcher.

Well this is all well and good, but what we really need is for someone to develop a quality application to modify Windows 7 themes similar to StyleBuilder from TGTSoft. The only one on the market is AVE Style Builder, and it is not very user friendly at this time. You need to be a genius almost and a programmer to use it.

Who made these?

Looks like somebody took beta or rc versions of patched windows 7 uxtheme files and simply changed the version info and said they are RTM

I think they first used the Multi Patcher for patching the files and then uploaded them.

I have a question. Has anyone made any theme for Windows 7 which requires uxtheme.dll patched? If so, can you post some links? :)
