Portable Ubuntu for Windows is a Ubuntu system running as a Windows application.

This system is built with the Colinux Kernel, Xming X server and Pulseaudio server for Windows.

Portable Ubuntu for Windows is a useful tool when you need to move yourself to other machine that have Windows as operating system.

Considering i just hosed my Windows XP to go BACK to Ubuntu (Doh!) i feel very, very SILLY now...
I have NOT tested this, but here is a link to the Screenshots...

Yeah, it is running UBUNTU as a Windows app, pretty cool. I can see a ton of new Windows Desktop "Distros" coming out soon, It seems as if KDE4 or XFCE4 may be soon on the Windows Desktop...

DL @ Sourceforge
Beware, the app is roughly 450MB though. Just a warning.

Ok, because I was so unsure of where to post this at, i put here in General Tech. This could easily go under XP or Vista or Alternative OS or ... hell, anywhere!

I hate how it's so "easy" to run Linux apps in Windows but it's "hard" to run Windows apps in Linux <_<

I prefer the Ubuntu one :D

And I can't wait to download this!!! I've always liked Ubuntu, but didn't like dual booting and virtual machines. Great Find!

Possible from long ago - but good job someone make it easier to install & run. Still it isn't something I would advice for daily work: there are so many performance, compatibility, X issues I won't even want to think of those.

And GUI like mentioned in post won't be seen AFAIK - Windows and Linux have different window painting(simplifying) concepts...unless one would write *some* code - but unhappily there are only few people on this World that:
1) Know what I mean
2) Could code it
3) Had time for all that
and tricky part is: if You meet all those conditions, You probably wont get even interested in those as You can shape system on Your will so You don't need porting anything ^o^

I agree, that is why i have taken up learning .net. not really so much for the windows side, but because i can make use of Mono, because that is on all of the three big OSes.

With that tool, i can write code once, compile it for the three, and then send it out.

All of this is dependent on

http://www.colinux.org/

It is just another way of virtualization. So instead of having a daddy-os and a sonny-os running inside a VM, what we have here is a host-os and a guest-os. The Guest-os uses resources which are emulated by the drivers that this client pushes into the host os when it installs. And therefore u see only one process from the host-os giving the feeling that its running like an app.

Difference between using this and using something like VMWare is the guest-os gets full control over the hardware in this case.

Pretty cool !!
