Yesterday the shiny new Windows 7 build 7068 got leaked and everyone installed the Ultimate Edition! Nobody installed the Starter Edition to see what Microsoft didn't put in it in comparison to the other editions, but Paul Thurrott took pains of installing each versions on his various machine. The list of removed feature is big but the biggest surprise is that you can't even change your wallpaper in the Starter Edition!

In Windows 7 Starter Edition, the personalization option on the context menu isn't available!

Rafael has posted these two workarounds on his blog for the future Windows 7 Starter Edition users:

* As an Administrator, reset the permissions on img0.jpg, and overwrite file with any picture.
* Use third-party wallpaper switchers.

Starter has been out since XP it was originally designed for rural countries.

And i'm gonna guess all these restrictions will be able to be fixed with registry tweaks.

I didn't see any mention of Windows 7 Pro having Media Center on Paul's site. I thought each version of Windows 7 was supposed to have all the features the cheaper versions had, unlike what MS did with Vista.

starter isn't going to be sold commercially, so really, we all shouldn't give a damn about it.

It's only for OEMs so they will put their own wallpaper and lock it.

Home Basic can't change the wallpaper by the usual way too. You have to right-click images and use them as wallpaper. Quite stupid I think.

Everyone is saying this is a fail, but this is really what it's for I think as well. Dell/HP/Acer/insert_name_here will just promote their company to the poorer areas, meaning more money for them :P
