Confirmed by Mr. Sinofsky himself, there will be no native BluRay support in Windows 7. However, BluRay Drive makers and OEMs will be able to extend Windows Media Center to support playback. What will be supported in Windows 7 though, is the burning of BRD discs.

Hi Steven,
Will Windows 7 include support for watching Bluray disks out of the box? Maybe you could make a post on the e7 blog about codec support in Windows 7.
Thanks!

Thanks. Blu-Ray support will be provided by PC makers or BRD drive makers. We have new extensibility in media center for those that provide BRD playback to support integrated playback. We do have support for burning BRD data discs.

This is because MS does not want to have to pay out for the royalties to include the bluray codec in 7. cant say that i blame them, because odds are the BluRay disc's will come with some software that it can install on our PC for playback anyway.

And just ive it some tome, there will be a kLite BluRay edition soon enough.

This is so stupid. Why would they support burning and not playing?

Yeah Villain, maybe you're right. They don't want to pay for licenses.

KLite BluRay

Don't worry. VLC, GOM, KM, BS and many other players will support blu-ray video format.

Blu-Ray is the future of CD/DVD video/audio
This is not a good move from MS.

Bad move, but I think eventually they will have to add them because like Endrit said Blu Ray is the future.

Well until they get under 100+ for a burner or a reader they're going no where mainstream.

And were just now getting into the HD monitor generation true HD is still very new technology I don't see bluray becoming mainstream until 2010+

Its only a codec and alot of companies already offer readers for it I believe.

They'll support it when they see it worth their while but until then its just not worth paying royalties for.
