The version of Windows 7 Beta 1 that Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT) made available for download on its Technet site Thursday does not support upgrades from systems running its Windows XP operating system!

It does, however, permit upgrades from Vista SP1 to Windows 7.

A Microsoft spokesman said that no final decisions have yet been made about what will be included or not included in the generally available version of Windows 7, but that the company as a practice advises only clean installations of operating systems during the beta phase anyway.

okay... what's up with that?
I think this is complete BS... hopefully they don't make the same decision with the final version.

Why does this come as such a surprise?

You do realize that XP and Windows 7 are totally different from the ground up?

I wouldn't upgrade even if I could.
Clean install is way better, even when its not beta.

Upgrade is never a good thing to do with Vista or Windows 7. It's messy and it never works as well as a clean install.

Who would want to upgrade to Vista 7 (call it what it is)

XP is so much more stable.

plus, if you "upgrade" to a beta then later have to downgrade back... why do that? Make a partition and Duel boot if ya want to try a beta.

Do you know how ignorant that statement is?

Vista was more stable then XP

Windows 7 actually runs faster then XP so yeah skip over and keep with your 8 year old os. See how far it gets you when they stop making applications for it.

Read his sig. He's got an ancient Acer with an integrated graphics card, 2.1 GHz processor, he can't even run Vista I bet

my system is 3 years old thanks very much :P and considering that SP3 for XP came out last year I would say that this OS is not "old" yet. Last time I checked there are very few Vista and newer software out there.. as a matter of fact there is more software available for XP than any other OS atm.

When you grow up and have a family you will see that sometimes you cant always keep up with today's technology every day.

I buy a new system when the old one cant do what I need it to. So far, so good ;)
