gOS Linux today announced “Cloud,” a new operating system that boots into a browser with Google, Yahoo! and Live in seconds, and optionally boots into Windows. Good OS will preview Cloud on a GIGABYTE Touch-Screen Netbook at the Netbook World Summit and online at thinkgos.com.
GIGABYTE Touch-Screen Netbooks will be preloaded with Cloud and Windows XP together early next year.

Cloud features a beautifully designed browser with an icon dock for shortcuts to favorite apps, tabs for multi-tasking between web and rich client apps, and icons to switch to Windows, power off, and perform other necessary system functions. Users power on their computers, quickly boot into Cloud for Internet and basic applications, and then just power off or boot into Windows for more powerful desktop applications.

news source from yesterday also:OS News Story

i am almost tempted to think that is mozilla using the Chrome skin, becas AFAIK chrome has not been ported to Linux yet. And this is just a normal linux distro, just highly stripped down and modded for only the machine's hardware, hence the super fast boot time.

i think that Splashtop is the same thing, just an extra small linux distro.

once people get a hold of the sources for this, however, it will take time to boot. running through scripts to get all hardware info take a bit of time, unless if they make the screen run at SVGA 800*600.

and i think that is what they are doing. they have a custom init image that loads up a SVGA only X.org server, that has the modded webbrowser as the main portion of the start up script, along with what ever the dock is. i am tempted to think that it is some kind of a python dock script.

so yes, good idea, but how about people make this kind of thing for every desktop PC, and not just a special "only for this desktop" pc.

have it run through the init process, detect the needed hardware, save it as an init.rc file or such... you know.

"vast knowledge" is a bit of a stretch. i would see if i could find the whole setup file, burn to CD or USB, and see if it has a setup.

basically, to boot in to the "other OS" it is calling a Grub chroot +1 / execute bootloader.

you know, this REALLY makes me wonder if i could do something like this.

i believe in free. and if i did this, it would be free. if i had to write custom apps and scripts, they would be free, but closed. odds are, i would look for existing technologies, blend it all together, and release it as free and open source.

The best part is that it takes only 35 MB of hard-disk space. Now I want this for my laptop! :woot:
