Driver problems with popular devices were one of the main reasons why Vista came across like five years of wasted effort when it originally debuted, a fact acknowledged by Microsoft executives as they opened WinHEC..

Microsoft doesn't want a repeat of that experience when Windows 7 comes around, and thus constantly emphasized the need to cooperate with hardware builders.

Windows 7 has an enhanced driver installation model that is designed to simplify installation, many of its features are implemented via XML and other information stored in what's known as the Device Display Object. In theory, hardware manufacturers can simply add those components to their existing Vista driver rather than rewriting the entire code base.

Great news :D

Yeah that's why when I bought my laptop 2 years ago, it only had 1gb of RAM. Good job HP! (and they blamed it on MS). Who's to blame on the Vista messup?

It was not Microsofts fault that Vista flopped.
Vista in itself is a good OS.
It was the 3rd party drivers that made it crash not respond very well.

No I mean like the requirements. Microsoft said it would be fine with 1gb RAM when we know now it's not. But with Windows 7 we know that it could run with 512mb due to its low static memory.

So was that Microsoft's misjudgement? And yeah I know it was the 3rd party drivers.

It all depends on your definition of fine.

If Grandma just needs to machine to play solitaire, do bills, surf for porn, and office, then 1gb is more than fine for Vista.

Not everyone is a graphic designer, programmer, gamer, or other power user.

Hmm, can't say anything bad about Vista itself, nor about its hardware requirements. I ran Vista with 1 GB of RAM for about 2 years (since the public beta). While Photoshop CS needed about 10 seconds to load, after that it ran fine on the system. It wasn't the fastest, of course, but it wasn't really slower than with Win XP.

Hell, I even played FEAR, NfS:Carbon etc on that system (and no, the graphics haven't been tuned down;)) with good fps rates.

What am I trying to say? I think Vista is not the resource hog everyone (even MS itself) is talking about... It can be, but since we are all power users we should know how to configure a system to run as good as it can. And as adrynalyne already pointed out: Vista is fine for "Normal" people, too.

3rd Party Companies already have Windows 7 Pre-Betas.

Infact whilst using W7, i've seen some drivers for my brother printer and cam already.
